Notes:

Everytime I saw a common person walking into the crime scene, I always would have a fear that the perp might still be around lurking and try to attack that person.  This is the first time that I know of this happening in the opening scene.  Wasn't it interesting too of seeing the victim being able to point to where the crime took place.  Kinda scary.

As to this ep itself, I wasn't too enthusiastic about it.  It seemed to blend too many old themes like the mob and police corruption.  It's hard after 16 years to find something new to savor on, and I didn't see it here in this case.  What I saw was the first half being like a typical investigation ending up on the wrong side for the good guys and the second half getting to be too confusing with so many twists and turns than San Francisco streets.  Did the cop kill in self defense?  Did he do this on orders from the wife or the mob?  Did he do this to clean up his dirty past?  I couldn't figure out which one TPTB were trying to sell to me.  They brought up so many possibilities that it muddied the waters whereby I simply wanted to give up.

I could understand Jack's reasoning for just running with the ball and let the chips fall where they may.  It's perhaps great that he didn't fall into this trap set up by the cop and is willing to have to retry old cases.

But if there was anything worthy of value to take from this, it would be that you have to watch every corner and not get hurt.
