Summary:
A serial perp and
frequent felon continues on his crime spree of NYC by repeatedly robbing,
mugging, and in this case killing innocent people. Lennie and Ed are called to
investigate the latest incident involving the muder and mugging of a 30ish
black woman. Van Buren tells them to get moving since the police brass is
putting pressure on her and the detectives. Lennie and Ed do their usual
questioning of witnesses and possible suspects, but only get bupkes. They do
question an ER doctor (Hayden) since he's treated some of these victims before
along with possible suspects for gunshot wounds. The doctor has no sympathy for
the criminals, but feels it's his job to treat anyone. Ed gets a little miffed
when it turns out the doctor treated someone who turned out killed a cop.
Lennie and Ed eventually
find the suspect and arrest him for the murder of the woman. He gives some
attitude, but denies any wrongdoing. Physical evidence convinces Serena to
arraign the perp. Branch then decides to up the ante to murder one, like he did
in "Tragedy in Rye." However, Jack and Serena don't seem to argue
this one.
The perp's attorney
argues before Judge Pongracic and after some back and forth between him and
Jack, Pongracic decides to dismiss the charges due to a lack of credible
evidence. Branch is furious about this and tells Van Buren to trace the perp to
see what he might do next.
Two days later, the perp
gets shot at some drug alley and ends up at the ER with the same doctor. The
perp dies and it seems the case is close, however a nurse walks into Jack's
office and tells him and Serena about something suspicious of the doctor not
doing his job fully since Lennie and Ed were looking by in the waiting room.
After getting the report
from ME Rodgers saying the perp could have been saved in the ER operating room,
Jack convinces Branch the doctor should be arrested for depraved indifference
homicide. Ed and Lennie relunctantly do this since they feel the doctor did
nothing wrong.
I'll leave it to you to
fill in the details of the trial of the doctor and how this ep ends.
