Notes:

I am pleased once again to offer my grades for the new season. Please note that I will have a seperate post in a few minutes where I rank the season openers in order. Look for it.

As for this episode, let me say this was a great beginning to S14 and worthy of not seeing the last half hour of the CA governor's debate. When I read the promo, I thought that it would be Jessica Sheets who would pull a trick like this. But as usual we get that L&O twist and have someone whom we haven't met before do this and almost gets away with it.

As for what happened to Sheets, I think Jack remembered what happened to Danielle Mellnick last year when her involvement with a client in a non legal way got her shot and we still don't know what happened. That is why he decided to not opposed Jessica's request to be taken off the case. Someone must wonder why more real life defense attorneys do this if they truly feel their life is in danger.

Regarding the Schwimmer character, he was clearly caught between a rock and a hard place. I would have like to have heard more direct evidence which linked his involvement with covering up the crimes. But in the end he has no one to blame himself for the mess which he created. He could have simply kept quiet and not allow that monster of Bruner to spill this secret. If Schwimmer wanted confirmation about these deaths, couldn't he have asked Jack to have Lennie and Ed help out in exchange for taking the DP off the table? I'm not a true expert on the law and criminal procedure, so if anyone out there can supply some answers that would help. In any case, after the way he tried to lure Serena in that outdoor scene I lost any respect I had for him and his involvement just confirmed this. Out of curiousity, how would you compare the Schwimmer situation with that of Paul Koppell or even Mellnick from last year. The big difference being the latter two were Jack's friends and hence received more consideration.

What do you think about whether Skoda or even Huang should have been brought in to interview the creep? Would it have been a waste of time or offer some more insight. Setting that aside, I think the plot and direction of the show was complex yet very easy to navigate through.

The "Law" part was pretty good. Ed seemed to move up a rung in terms of intensity and Lennie toned down his one liners, which I think was needed. There were brief instances though of some staleness. But not too much to worry.

Right now I have to say this is the leading contender for the best ep for S14. But we have at least 23 more eps to go before the ultimate judgment. This was very good though.
