Practical Extension and Recovery Language

PERL was designed at NASA by Larry Wall in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory during the year of 1987.  He developed this language as a programming language for techical people working with the UNIX operating system.  PERL is popular for creating Web application programs using the standards set by the Common Gateway Interface (CGI).  PERL has many features that explain its popularity as a language for CGI program development.  A few are ¹:

  •  PERL is a free language with a lot of free applications.  This language is readily available on the internet, free of charge with many Web sites offering free downloading of CGI/PERL programs.
  • PERL is easy to work with.  Other languages require lengthy headers and separate compilation processes when used.
  • PERL provides a CGI module.  PERL offers several modules for performing a variety of tasks.
  • PERL applications are portable. These programs can easily be moved between Web servers that run on different operating systems.
