Thoughts on Northern Ireland and Socialist Politics
UPDATE Aug. 2005

If you came here for SJNI, you might want to read this...

First, SJNI has been completely inactive for about 1 and 1/2 years now. This is partly because I've been having a lot of personal problems intertwined with my political activism. I have recently been working on resolving that. One thing I am  going to do is start a personal web-page, largely to publish my writings, mostly on N. Ireland. At the risk of sounding like I have a surplus instead of a shortage of self-confidence, I think I have a lot of very important things to say but have had trouble lately finding ways to express them to a large or even moderate-sized  audience. I might at some point start a Blog and/or move to another site (I'm not too familiar with this stuff, but I imagine at some point I might have more material on here than Yahoo! is able to host for free).

In any case, if you have come here as a CU-Boulder student looking for SJNI, I am sorry, but SJNI is pretty much dead. Between my personal problems, my age (29) and my non-student status, I am not going to be starting it up again, and I think all past members have moved on. However, st some point in the next few months, I might start a NI project at the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center.

For now I'm going to leave the existing SJNI material almost completely untouched (partly why I'm offering this explanation), but am going to add another, larger part of the site that is my personal page. The mccannfarrell account is mine, I currently don't feel like completely re-arranging the site, so I hope no one thinks that's innapropriate. The part of the site that is my stuff will be identified as such, it is not SJNI stuff.

So, feel free to look around, and let me know what you think.

MISSION STATEMENT

The maintenance of British rule in the 6 north-eastern counties of Ireland has involved denying both the right of national self-determination of the Irish and the civil and human rights of the Nationalist/Catholic population in N. Ireland.

We are a student group committed to educating people about this complicated and long-running conflict and generating support for those who are struggling to achieve justice, democracy, peace and national self-determination. We are a multi-tendencied group
expressing support for many different republican, progressive, and human rights organizations in Ireland. We neither condemn nor condone the past use of force by republicans. We support the cease-fires of paramilitary groups and the pursuit of politics by non-violent and political means. We intend to focus primarily on educating people about N. Ireland and promoting human rights there.
