This page shows some events in 1999. Also gives a sense for my planned event schedule this year. I'll be running mostly with the BMW club (various BMWCCA chapters), the Porsche Club (other regions -- my home region runs Porsche-only events) and the NSX Club of America (NSXCA) and CGI Motorsports.

NSXCA -- Indy Karting

Karting Victory Podium, February 1999 Over 20 hardy souls (mostly windy-bags and cheese-heads) braved the Indiana winter for an evening of competitive team racing at the Johansson Karting center in Indianapolis.
The tight, 4-turn 800 foot track allows the small single-speed karts to hit speeds up to 40 mph (current lap record: 19.97 sec). The Dino karts are powered by 200 cc Honda methanol-fuel motors.

Two club members, Lewis and Dave T., helped co-drive their teams to victory. Lewis' team worn first place (BLUE ribbons) and Dave's won second (RED ribbons). That's Lewis in the center podium, Dave on far left.

CGI Motorsports -- GingerMan

Inaugural Driver-Ed Event
GingerMan Raceway

NSX F16 with Dan O's 92 Dan O's silver 92 with NSX F16 Movit P911TT brake kit on Chuck M's red NSX-T CGI Motorsports, headed up by Midwest NSXCA member Phil Mirenda, is dedicated to the advancement of the sport through a combination of quality well-thought-out products and great driver-ed/track events. After hosting a successful lapping day last Fall, CGI kicks off this season with a Driver-Ed event held at GingerMan Raceway.

For many of us, this was the season opener, a chance to shake off any winter rust. It was also an opportunity to test out our cars, and any improvements we had made in the off-season. Several drivers and cars participated in this event, including 6 NSXs, 3 Integra Type-Rs, 2 Vipers, 1 P911C4, 3 Formula-Mazda cars, 2 race-prepped (SCCA-SSB) Neons, 1 Camaro, 1 Mustang, several other imports (including a fast Camry 4-door sedan) and 1 8 passenger limo (!).

Chuck M. opened up with his modified 95 red NSX-T. Now equipped with P911TT front brakes (Movit) and more go-fast engine work (custom IEM), new suspension (Bilstein dampers), clutch (CenterForce) and tires (Hoosier 16/17). Look for this car in exciting Class A action... coming soon to a track near you!!

I was testing out a new NSX-R drivetrain (4.23 R&P, close-ratio gears, high-torque LSD) on my 93 silver NSX coupe. Worked really well, particularly with 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts, and 3-2 downshifts. The new clutch (RM Racing/ClutchMasters) also felt very good. Future mods include a competition harness restraint system (Dali/Schroth) and exhaust headers (RM/BB TriFlo).

GingerMan Raceway, est 1995 GingerMan Raceway is a private road-racing course situated on a 330-acre site in scenic South Haven, MI (about 90 miles from Chicago). The 11-turn clockwise track is 1.88 miles long, twisting left and right and up and down on the naturally rolling landscape. It simulates a country road, but without risks to pedestrians and oncoming traffic or ditches and phone poles, trees and other objects.
A challenging yet very safe track, GingerMan is a favorite venue for club racing and driver-education events, as well as testing and research by professional race teams and magazines.
This relatively new facility was built on vacant farmland in 1995, which contained aged and past-their-prime apple and cherry orchards. The track layout was developed by Alan Wilson of Motorsports Development, Denver, Colorado, to take advantage of the natural terrain. Track grading and paving was done by Klett Construction Company, a local firm, using special asphalt material formulated to stand up to the stresses of racing and our harsh MidWest winters.

Thanks to Chris, I ended up driving my old NSX (91 red/ivory) at the 2-day Driver-Ed event. Our exhaust (used Comptech Walker model) was starting to blow out, so we needed to back off the loud pedal a tad to meet track noise limits. But hey, Laguna's plenty fun even at 7/10ths...

Dinner at La Fina (Lud E) A bunch of us headed out to dinner after the Sunday track event. Most of us ended up at La Fina, a little Italian place on the Monterey Waterfront. Group included Alex V, David H, John Vasos (Acura of Brookfield), Daniel S, Mary and Mike B, and a few other folks. BMWCCA Buckeye -- Putnam

Putnam Park: 10 turn, 1.8 mile road course Putnam Park Road Course was conceived in 1990, when Richard L. Diasio saw a need for a road course in Indiana that was devoted to club racers. He designed Putnam Park Road Course to be safe, fast, and challenging. Also, he wanted to build a circuit that could be viewed in its entirety from the pits, so that both participants and crew could be a part of the action at all times.
Putnam Park was constructed in 1991 on 202 rolling acres just west of Indianapolis. The track opened on Labor Day weekend with kart racing held by the Indianapolis Kart Club. The 10-turn, 1.8 mile road course offers a combination of speed, challenge and safety.
Several groups and marque clubs use Putnam Park for driver education and club race events. These include several BMW and Porsche Club groups, local Karting and Motorcycle clubs, and Track Time Performance Driving School.
Putnam Park has undergone many improvements since the opening in 1991. Over 1200 linear feet of guardrail has been removed; ground has been graded to provide additional runoff room, and gravel traps have been added in areas to enhance safety. In 1997, the entire track was repaved and the curbing was widened up to 4 feet in all areas and painted red & white for increased visibility.


BMWCCA N Ohio -- Mid-Ohio

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

Mid-Ohio: 15 turn, 2.4 mile road course Mid-Ohio. Known as the "Most Competitive in the U.S.," Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is a 2.4-mile/15-turn or 2.25-mile/13-turn permanent road course. Set in a 330-acre facility in the hills of Lexington, Ohio (60 miles north of Columbus and 75 miles south of Cleveland), it is a favorite venue for several car club events (driver-ed and club racing) as well as several marquee motorsports events.
Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was opened by Les Griebling in the spring of 1962. The first event was a driver's training school. Johnny Rutherford won the first CART race held at Mid-Ohio on July 13, 1980, driving a Chaparral-Cosworth. In October, 1981, James R. Trueman purchased the track. Some of the improvements he instituted were amphitheater seating, paddock garages, and the five-story Goodyear Tower housing media and two V.I.P. suites. Mid-Ohio is the home of The Mid-Ohio School which was established in 1993.
