Rat's Tail Grass
Sporobolus creber
Distribution in Canberra Region. Common only along the eastern edge of the region.
Typically found in secondary grassland or grassy woodland on sandy soils in areas with more reliable summer rainfall.
Seen especially in disturbed areas in Canberra.
Dispersal. Seeds are dispersed by wind, water and animals.
General Description and Biology
Small to medium-sized tufted warm-season perennial.
Leaves coarse, sparse, pale green, mostly hairless (distinctions from CNG).
Seed-head is a long narrow "punctuated" spike (gaps in flowers/seeds along stalk),
maturing to deep grey.
Similar exotic species: seeds continuous along stem (not punctuated).
