Origin. Mediterranean.

Distribution in Canberra Region. Widespread in woodlands and grasslands, especially grazed areas, roadsides and waste places.

Dispersal. Seeds dispersed by wind, water, and animals.

General Description and Biology

Erect, often much branched; to about 100 cm in height and 1-2 m in diameter. Can be annual or biennial, depending on season of germination and climatic conditions. The rigid stems and the leaves are covered with fine downward-projecting hairs. Rosette leaves are long and multilobed; upper adult leaves are spear-shaped. Flowers pale yellow. Control methods

a. Manual.
When well grown the taproot of this weed is deep and strong.
After rain, the weed can often be pulled out intact.
Otherwise it can be dug out with a mattock.
If cut off, it grows again.
b. Chemical. Wipe rosette with weedbrush containing glyphosate 33% in water.
