Brachychiton populneus

Distribution in Canberra Region. Widespread but not common in the region; mainly on stony dry forested slopes or woodlands.

Dispersal. Seeds are dispersed by water.

General Description and Biology

A tree to 20 m high with a straight stout trunk to 1 m diameter that emits a hollow sound when tapped.
Outer bark grey-brown, fissured; inner bark mottled orange/chocolate.
Mature leaves are alternate, variable from unlobed to 5-lobed; leathery, oval, pointed, 5-10 cm long, 2-5 cm across; leaf stalks 1-2 cm long; leaves shiny green above, paler below.
Flowers in spring and summer; flowers bell-shaped, cream to greenish with brown or reddish spots inside.
Fruits are hard boat-shaped capsules 2-10 cm long.
Found on stony slopes in open woodlands, below 1000 m altitude.
Can resemble Nettle Tree.
