Origin. S-E China.
Distribution in Canberra Region. Common in woodlands near gardens, especially in Canberra Nature Park and CUPP areas.
Dispersal. Birds. Also tips of drooping branches sometimes take root (layering).
General Description and Biology
A shrub or tree to 4- 5 m high; profusely branching in graceful curves.
No thorns. Leaves entire, alternate on branchlets, dark green above, pale green and slightly hairy below.
Flowers pale pink; fruits in dense clusters on ends of branchlets; bright red and containing 2-5 seeds each.
Once established, this invasive shrub eventually colonizes totally any small area.
Small plants can be pulled out whole if the soil is reasonably soft.
Otherwise, control is by usual cut-and-dab procedure.
