Brome Grasses
Bromus spp.
Origin. Mediterranean.
Distribution in Canberra Region. Widespread in woodland, drainage lines and some grasslands.
Dispersal. By wind, water and animals.
General description and biology.
Small to medium sized, tufted.
Many pale green to rich green leaves, slightly hairy, 5-10 mm wide, to 40 cm long.
Prominent membrane at the inner junction of leaf-blade and sheath where it clasps stem.
Seed-heads vary from small and dense, to large and spreading.
Similar species: Wheatgrass (Elymus scaber).
