Helsinki (cont.)

We fortuitously ran into the Daniels on the streets of a city with eight and a half million people. Neither of us had our cameras with us, so we could not capture our sheer joy in seeing each other again. After a nice long talk, a libation together, we went on our separate ways again. They were planning on a longer stay in the Baltic countries than was comfortable for us. We were thinking of going direct to the Mediterranean for the warmth that we had so sorely missed this "summer".

On our way to find the Lutheran Cathedral, we also enjoyed this tribute to statesman Mannerheim. Mannerheim mounted This was the view of the Lutheran Cathedral we had seen a couple of days before from the Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Cathedral Cathedral from main street The pictures also show the regaling that was underway: balloons, streamers, food and craft tents everywhere. There was an air of gaiety in the milling crowds for the week or so we were in Helsinki.
Most mornings we were greeted with a whole fleet of hot-air balloonists sailing outside our apartment windows. Balloonists from our window We delighted in finding yet another twin to daughter Beth's little yellow VW bug in Helsinki. We found Beth's car again
