Benjamin arrives

Mother, son doing well

COVINGTON, La. -- Looks like we'll have to set another plate out for the family's annual Thanksgiving reunion.
Benjamin Pedro Scott became the newest member of the family,  born Tuesday, Aug. 8, to Elena and Mike.
He made his entrance just one minute before noon and weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz. at birth.
The entire labor process was relatively smooth; although it is Lanie's second child, her first was via C-section, so it was the first time she went through labor.
The speed with which labor progressed apparently took hospital personnel by surprise. By the time they delivered the epidural -- something Lanie's doctor insisted upon given the possibility of the need for an emergency C-section -- she was already dialated 9 centimeters. As a result, she got to experience quite a bit of active labor before getting any phamaceutical relief. Six hours after nurses started Lanie's pitocin drip to induce labor, Ben made his entrance.
   Here's how labor progressed:

> 5 a.m., Lanie reports to hospital.
> 6 a.m., pitocin drip started.
> 8:30 a.m., doctor breaks Lanie's water.
> 10:30 a.m., epidural delivered.
> 11:59 a.m., Ben born

Lanie, of course, required some patching up after delivery, but all in all, she said, she

PRETTY BABY: Benjamin P. Scott relaxes in his bassinet at St. Tammany Parish Hospital. Benjamin, a healthy boy,  made his entrance into the world on Tuesday, Aug. 8 . Both he and mom Elena are doing fine.

BIG BROTHER
For his part, Samuel is handling brotherhood wonderfully.
Mike and Lanie have made an effort to make sure visitors don't focus solely on the baby upon their arrival, and they brought home presents for Sam from the hospital.
Before he could open those presents, though, Sam saw Ben. With a quizzical tone in his voice, he asked, "Who's that?"
"That's Baby Ben," he was told.
At that point, Sam slowly stepped toward the baby and gently planted a kiss on his foot.
Since then, he has become an expert helper, going as far as to pat Ben's hand when he cries during a diaper change. Looks like the start of a beautiful friendship ...

wouldn't trade the experience for anything. "I can't believe I did it," she said.
She and Ben were discharged from the hospital on Thursday, two days after the birth, and both are at home, resting comfortably.

NAME GAME
At his birth, Benjamin was nameless because Mike and Lanie couldn't decide which name they liked better: Benjamin or Jacob. Lanie decided to "see which one he looked like" before giving him a name. When she saw him, the choice was easy: "He's a Benjamin," she said.
He got his middle name from his maternal grandfather, Pedro Marina, with whom he
