Lanie, new baby, are still waiting

COVINGTON, La. -- Two weeks after their midnight trip to the hospital, Lanie and the new baby apparently still are reluctant to separate.
About 11:30 on July 4, Mike and Lanie went to the hospital after she had experienced nearly a full day of contractions. The diagnosis: premature labor, by about five weeks.
Lanie's doctor was able to arrest labor and kept her in the hospital for a couple of days. Upon her discharge, she was  prescribed a couple of oral medications -- Brethine and Procardia -- to make sure the baby's arrival didn't come any sooner than it had to.
So far, it has worked. An appointment today, Tuesday, showed the baby is doing just fine and growing like a weed. At 36 weeks gestation, he measures at 38 weeks.
Lanie's fine, too, although quite uncomfortable, what with the extra weight and near-record temperatures in the New Orleans area. She has just about decided to stop taking her anti-labor medicine -- against the advice of her husband -- just to get things over with.
"I'm at 36 weeks," she said. "This baby can come on out."

IN LIKE FLINT
FLINT, Mich. -- After a loooong car trip culminated by a breakdown, Besty is in Michigan and ready to get her life there going.
First on tap: Bring her car to a mechanic to get looked at.
"The trip to Michigan started off well, until about Mississippi, when

my car started to act funny and wouldn't go into gear," she wrote in a recent e-mail. "Luckily, I was smart enough to punch the clutch with my fist a few times. Presto-magic! It worked long enough to get me to Shane's parents driveway, which is where it sits until I get it towed to a mechanic."
After that, she'll have to start unpacking; the moving truck was scheduled to arrive Wednesday. "Can't wait to set up the apartment," Besty said. "It is a cute two-bedroom that overlooks a nine-hole golf course. The neighbors seem nice."
Sounds pretty swanky. Let's hope her new neighbors don't steal and sell her bicycle, like her last neighbor did.

NOT ALONE
NEW ORLEANS -- Besty isn't the only one to travel recently. Liz, who has been in Quebec for the past few weeks, finally has returned home.
Best of all, she came bearing gifts: minature red VW bugs -- just like the one she drives -- for all of her grandchildren.
Let's hope she can avoid the shock of travleing from Quebec's climate to the 100-plus-degree temperatures down South.

FOOTBALL!!!!
COVINGTON, La. -- We know what you're thinking: "It's just July. It's too early for football."
Not so fast. NFL training camps are in full gear, and its time to start forming fantasy football leagues.
This year, we were hoping to form a family league -- purely for fun, not money, of course. (We'll play for a REAL prize: bragging rights.)  Yahoo! has a feature where 10 people can join a league and "draft" a team of real-life players just before the season starts. From week to week, it keeps track of who's doing the best. Not only is it fun AND simple (Luck plays as much a role as anything. Just ask anyone who drafted Jamal Anderson last year.)  but it's also free!
Sound like a good idea? First,  let's find out if we can field 10 "teams." If you want to play, leave a message on the message board. We'll keep track, and if there is enough interest, we'll kick off when the new NFL season does..
