COVINGTON, La. -- Weeks before his arrival, the newest member of the family, it seems, has payback on his mind. More than two decades after Bobby paid a newborn Michael Walsh a silver dollar, the traditional payment made to someone born on another's birthday, Mike and Lanie's baby tried to force an equal payment from Judy. The due date for the as-yet unnamed baby is Aug. 15, but Lanie went into premature labor July 4, Judy's birthday. After hosting an Independence Day party at their new home, Lanie and Mike rushed to St. Tammany Parish Hospital after contractions started coming less than three minutes apart. A quick exam revealed Lanie was two inches dialated and showing no signs of slowing down. Her new doctor, who she had not yet met since she moved back to Covington only days earlier, decied to admit her for a couple of days. He presribed Brethine and Procardia, apparently both asthma medications. While Lanie was in the hosptial, both were delivered through an IV, but upon her discharge, she got scripts for oral doses. Now, seven days later, the baby still seems to be cooperating. The problem: Lanie has been put on bedrest, which is tough with a 2-year-old son. To make matters worse, her mom, who is Lanie's usual nursemaid in such situations, is in Cuba until July 18.

Fortunately, Katy, Betsy and Sherry have volunteered to lend a hand. Katy has been spending nights in Covington and communting to work in New Orleans, and Betsy postponed her departure to Michigan by nearly a week. Sherry has served as the fill-in baby-sitter when Katy and Betsy have been indisposed. "I'm lucky to have such generous sisters," Mike said, "but they're still dorks."
BYE-BYE, BETSY NEW ORLEANS -- This week, Betsy will become the third Scott sister to leave New Orleans for the great American Midwest. Betsy's movers are set to load their van Wednesday morning, and she will head out the following day. Shane, Betsy's boyfriend, arrived Sunday and will make the drive back up north with her. An apartment just outside of Flint, Mich., has been secured and is awaiting Betsy's arrival. Betsy said one of the best parts about the move
is her new complex, which surrounds a nine-hole golf course. "Woo-hoo!" Betsy said. Betsy said she also is looking forward to beginning school in September, the reason for her move. If all goes as planned, after two years, she will be a nurse anesthetist. No one should worry about Betsy not getting enough home-cooked food while in Michigan since Shane's family lives in Flint, just a few miles from her apartment. And Shane is working in the same hospital Betsy will be working in, as chief resident. Athough they know she will be taken care of, Betsy's family is a little worried about her move. "I'll be the only sister left in the city ... sniff," Sherry said recently. Betsy will have family relatively close by: Bridget is attending school in Chicago, and Katy will return to the University of Missouri at summer's end.
