Driver's licenses, Prozac and a canal

NEW ORLEANS -- Look out, motoring public: Katy has her license.
Just a day before getting her new car last week, Katy got her driver's license, a major event that ended up showing once again how small a world it is.
When Liz took Katy to get the licenese, they had to go to the Driver's License Bureau's Metairie office -- a world away from the New Orleans location where all of the Scott kids got their first liceneses. On the plus side, though, Liz figured they would be able to avoid the same DMV offical who, during the driving portion of Bridget's test years ago, actually shouted, "You're going to kill us both," when she strayed a little too close to a roadside canal.
But when Laty and Liz walked into the Metairie office, who should they see? The same rotund DMV guy, apparently the subject of a transfer, "looking at us with fear in his eyes," Liz wrote. "But he never stopped smiling. Katy thinks he is either on Prozac -- a lot of Prozac -- or he had a stroke and his face is permanently fixed like that.
It didn't matter: Katy was lucky enough to have someone else administer her test. Aside from a rain shower, the entire procedure went

smoothly. She is now a licenesed driver. (Yay!)

LOST IN VEGAS

NEW OLEANS - There was a bit of worry in New Orleans recently when Betsy didn't return from her recent trip to Las Vegas as scheduled.
You'll remember, she flew out West at the orders of her personal physician, Shane, who insisted the desert air would help in her rehabilitation after her recent ACL surgery. ("Betsy to undergo ACL surgery," 5/9/2000.)
After intensive dice therapy, Betsy was scheduled to come home early last week. When she didn't show up, the worrying started.
Turns out the concern was all for naught: She decided to return home Friday, but she was so caught up in her, ahem, rehab, that she forgot to tell anyone.

THE WILD LIFE
FOLSOM, La. -- What do you get when you mix a herd of bison, four giraffes, zebras, rheas and assorted exotic hoofed animals?
A family outing for the New Orleans bunch, apparently.
Bobby, Lesley, Steven, Kelly, Mike, Lanie, Sam, Liz and
Katy recently toured Global Wildlife Center, a spawling park where passengers drive through a cageless preserve to take pictures of tons of animals and feed the ones that approach.
Aside from the urine smell emanating from the giraffe, the trip, which happened to coincide with the May 29 birthdays of Mike Walsh and Bobby  --  was enjoyed by all.
   Watch for photos.
