Mike makes major career move

NEW ORLEANS -- Question: What's better than having a Scott in your newsroom? Answer: Having two Scotts in your newsroom.
That's exactly what bigwigs at The Times-Picayune have discovered, offering Mike a position on their copy desk.
Katy, you'll remember, is interning on the T-P copy desk this summer, so the newspaper will find itself with a rare concentration of talent.
In addition to helping him realize a longtime goal, the new job will enable Mike, Lanie, Sam and fetus to move back to their home in Covington. (After a halfhearted attempt at selling it, Mike and Lanie decided instead to rent the house to a friend. Can you say "eviction"?)
Another benefit, and perhaps the biggest one, is that Lanie will be able to stay home with Sam and the new baby rather than jumping right back into the work force.
Mike's interview was a long one, and it saw its share of coincidences. First, the interview -- which ended up covering two days -- started on Katy's first day at work. Then, the paper's managing editor took Mike to dinner at the swanky French Quarter restaurant Bayona, which happens to be next door to the home of Liz's sister, Mary Jane.
"You should have told her you were going there," Liz said. "She would have watched you from her window, giving me a play-by-play account of what was going on: 'They're laughing now. He must

Notre Dame diploma on Sunday night. No update has come in from the Walshes, but we doubt anything happened to make university officials change their minds.
Mike's sister, Molly, will take her turn on June 2, graduating from Columbus High. Magdi and Robbie are planning to attend that event.
In Slidell, Steven graduated from pre-K in a ceremony attended by Liz as well as his maternal grandparents, Grammy Joy and Paw-Paw Ray.
Steven and his classmates sang a lot of songs about Teddy bears, Liz reports, which was the graduation theme.

be doing pretty well.' "
Day two lasted from 9 a.m to 7 p.m., and it saw Mike meet with editor after editor, sit in on news meetings and hang around the copy desk. Afterward, he dashed back to Houma to fill Sam and Lanie in on how it went.
Apparently it went better than Mike thought. One day later, the managing editor called to offer the job. "I knew I was going to offer it to you when you left here yesterday," Dan Shea, the managing editor, said.
Mike plans to give two weeks notice to The Courier today -- May 22 -- and he starts work at the T-P on June 12. He intends to commute from Houma until the new baby comes, at which time Lanie will stop working and the whole gang will move to Covington.

POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE
It's the graduation season across the country, and members of the family are doing a fair bit of diploma collecting.
First up was Mike Walsh, who  was scheduled to get his
