HOUMA -- Too close for comfort. As cliche as it is, that phrase perfectly describes the encounter Mike, Lanie and Sam had with an F2 tornado last week. The storm, which made national news, started its three-mile trek just a half-mile from their east Houma home. It eventually passed through their subdivision, about 50 yards from their house. They didn't suffer any damage, but some neighbors were not so lucky. At least two homes in the subidivion suffered roof damage, and debris -- leaves, branches, lumber, roofing, merchandise form a nearby store and a live king snake -- was scattered all over the neighborhood. Neither Mike nor Lanie were home at the time the storm hit -- they left just an hour before it came. And for those who need evidence that when it rains it pours: Three days after the tornado hit, Houma experienced widespread flooding and a freak hailstorm. Some areas saw five-plus inches of rain in a matter of hours. The Courier, of course, had tons of coverage . Mike pulled a 16-hour shift to help out, including putting together a front-page graphic depicting the twister's route. For more, click here or go to houmatoday.com and do a search for "tornado."
BIG BOY NEW ORLEANS -- He may be just two feet tall, but Gus is a big boy. What other explanation is there for his recent visist to the 1-year-olds' classroom? After a week or two of visiting, proud mom Sherry says, "he will move up from the fish room to the bear room, where he will be a cub." Gus' new teacher, Ms. Linda -- no relation to the
PHOTO OF THE WEEK: Steven, Kelly and Kelly's friend Linsey pose for a picture under "the big hat" at Cuco's. They went there for as a mini-celebration of Kelly's birthday, an occasion which won her the priveledge of donning "El Sombrero Grande." (Photo by Bob) _________________________________________
It seems Linda's daughter, Ellen, who is about 7 years old, was celebrating St. Patrick's Day by attending a skating party near her home in Bay St. Louis, Miss., when she took a spill. The result: a broken leg. Turns out she broke one of the bones in her lower leg. (Because we know you medical-types will ask: Liz wasn't sure if it was the tibia or fibula.) Anyway, the injury will keep little Ellen out of school for a couple of weeks. So much for the luck of the Irish.
QUOTABLE QUOTE: "Yah! A boy! Good job! I think you should name him after me since you found out he was a he on my birthday. If not, call him Ralph. Or Elmo." -- Katy, after finding out Mike and Lanie's baby-to-be is going to be a boy.
Miss Linda of "Romper Room" fame -- is already awaiting his arrival, partly because of his habit of flirting with the ladies. "So now I've been told he has bedroom eyes and good thighs," said Sherry, referring to a comment made by a cashier at Walgreens's regarding Gus' "healthy thighs." "Hmmm," Sherry wrote via e-mail. "What is going to happen when he starts to walk?" Is it too late to change his name to "Gus-anova"?
BAD NEWS COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Not everyone has had reason to celebrate lately. After leaving some furniture in their old house in an effort to entice buyers, Mark and Jennifer were burglarized. The bad guys, apparently realizing no one was living there, cleaned the place out: They got Grandma and Grandpa's big kitchen table and chairs, plus TV and VCR and, oddly enough, Alexis' clothes and stuffed animals.
BAD BREAK A trip to the friendly neighborhood ice rink ended up at the friendly neightborhood hospital for Linda Lacoste Salaum, Mary Jane's daughter.
