COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Katy found herself mulling a major career decision last week, one that most of us would kill for. Hours after she accepted a reporting intership at The Times of Shreveport, the third largest daily newspaper in Louisiana, she received a call from The Times-Picayune, the biggest paper in the state and one of the biggest in the South. Turns out they wanted her as a summer intern. Although the T-P job pays almost twice as much, the decision wasn't clear-cut. The reporting job in Shreveport was decidedly more sexy than a position on the T-P copy desk, which was what that offer consisted of. Then again, the T-P job did not require she own a car, and experience there would, after all, be a feather in her cap when it came time to hunt a full-time job. After much painful mulling, she made the decision to look to the future rather giving in to short-term gratification: Come summer, she will be an employee of The Times-Picayune. That decision was part of another big week for Katy. In addition to the job dilemma, she covered a speech by Democratic presidential hopeful Bill Bradley -- this just a week after covering a speech by Bill Clinton "I was close enough to pluck his giant waddle," she said in a recent e-mail, referring to Bradley's flabby neck. "But I took his picture instead. It was neat." |

RUBBING ELBOWS WASHINTON -- Katy is not the only one rubbing elbows with the power set. Liz recently spent time in Washington, D.C., attending an annual Mardi Gras celebraton hosted by Lousiana's congressional delegation. The real excitement came on the trip home, when the flight was delayed for an hour in Pittsburgh while mechanics worked to fix "what they said was the back door, and what I hoped wasn't really the ratchet screw or whatever it was that was faulty on that Alaska Airlines jet," she said via e-mail, referring to the recent air disaster. After lost luggage and lost cookies, she arrived safe at home, where she is readying for a trip to a journalism conference in Georgia. For more on the D.C. Mardi Gras, click here.
MAKING MUSIC CHICAGO -- Bridget's beau, Mack, recently traveled from the Windy City to the City of angels for a four-day conference of peace and music. |

The event, according to Bridget, is "the music industry conference. Besides being able to learn all about the newest music software and technology, he met some of his music hereoes including those he refers to as the 'Holy Trinity' of keyboards." It wasn't all fun and games, though. He attended the conference as a working journalist, uploading stories, photos and product reviews to the Web site Zzounds. "He wrote the intro to the NAMM conference and over half of the product descriptions -- hard guess which ones as they don't get their names up there," Bridget wrote. "Nonethesless, I'm very proud of my little music techy."
