For most, spring break in the Carribbean means fun and sun. For Betsy, though, it meant learning and sharing.
As part of a medical contingent visiting the Dominican Republic from Feb. 15 to 24, Betsy helped provide medical and surgical care to the needy people of the area.
     "I had spent
months gather-
ing equipment
and medications
and donations
(enough to
provide
anesthesia to
what we had
been told
would be about
40 patients),"
Betsy wrote.
  "Our team had
two surgeons,
one anesthesiologist,
one CRNA, (fellow anesthesia student) Margaret and I, one ER physician -- he ran the clinic -- a pediatric nurse -- she also helped run the clinic -- and several nurses to help with getting patients ready for surgery and to help patients

Liz, Katy, Mary Jane and Sherry were nothing if not festive recently during Jim Monaghan's St. Patrick's Day Parade in the French Quarter. It was the parade's first year without its namesake leading the way, but a good time was had by all anyway. As for their get-ups, Liz said, "I worried about wearing orange T-shirts -- they were left over from a long-ago Halloween parade. I consulted with the guys from the Belfast Circus -- two stiltwalkers and a fire swallower -- and they said it wouldn't be politically incorrect as long as we wore green with  them. So, as you can see, we did. (Photo submitted by Liz)

Betsy is back from Dominican Republic
Look again; that's not Venus Williams. It's Betsy, with her new hand-braided cornrows.

recover from surgery.
"We spent four days at the hospital, performed 69 surgeries, both pediatric and adult. The clinic saw about 500 people. It was crazy.  There were so many people that needed help.  I wish we could have done more!"
The extent of poverty on the island is dramatic, and, Betsy said, one can't help but to leave with a fresh perspective and feeling thankful "for all that we've

got."
Despite keeping a full work schedule, Betsy and friends managed to find time for some decompression, island style, via sightseeing and relaxing on the pristine beaches.
"I had been practicing my Spanish for several months.  It was fun to experiment with my new language --  only a few word mishaps -- but all in all, I was able to do pretty well."

QUEENS OF GREEN (AND ORANGE)
COVINGTON -- Halle Berry's Academy Award win was big, but it wasn't the biggest upset of Oscar's big night. No, that title goes to Mike Scott,
who ousted
Judy and Mick
as the champs
of the family
Oscar pool.
   The field was
narrow -- only
five teams com-
peted this year
-- but Mike
correctly
picked the
winners in
12 of 24 cat-
egories to
claim the
title.
   "I'd like
to thank all
the little
people who
helped make
this happen," Mike said after winning. "I'm so thrilled to have won. I'm sobbing like Halle Berry right now."
The defending champs actually finished third, correctly picking 10 categories. In second was
Katy's team, the second year in a row Katy has been first runner-up in the Oscar pool. (Always a bridesmaid...)
Not surprisingly, the worst performance in the contest was by
Dartboard Monkey, the team whose picks are selected by giving an arthritic monkey a handful of darts and poiting him toward an Oscar ballot.
SURVIVOR: For the second week in a row, the leader in the family Survivor pool is the
player who
probably
watches the
show the
least:
Steven.
   Bringing
up the rear
among the
human
contestants
once again
is Mike
Scott, who
is battling
Dartboard
Monkey to
stay out of the cellar.
