LOS ANGELES -- The stars were
out, the red carpet was on full dis-
play and the big winner on Oscar
night was -- dramatic pause --
Judy!
No, no, no; she didn't take home
a
real Oscar. (We'll leave those to
former college buddy Kate Capshaw.)
But she did display her knowledge of
Hollywood by finishing first in our
                   family Oscar pool.
                       Using the team name
                    "Oscar Levant"
                    (who?), Judy corr-
                    ectly predicted the
                    winners of 15 of
                    Sunday night's 23
categories. That's an impressive
65 percent success rate.
That also was good enough to finish first in our field of eight, but only barely.
Katy, with the team name "Greta Van Katy," correctly picked 14 categories, 61 percent.
"I'd like to thank the Academy," Judy said, just before being interrupted by the orchestra and whisked offstage.
     The experimental team
"BlindMonkey," whose picks were generated by a blind monkey tossing darts at an Oscar ballot, finished dead last, picking
just three categories correctly, 13 percent.
The final standings are as follows:
1) Judy's "Oscar Levant," 15 of 23, 65 percent; 2) Katy's "Great Van Katy," 14 of 23, 61 percent; 3) Liz's "Modine'sPicks," 11 of 23, 48 percent; 4) Bobby's "GladiatorRules," 10 of 23, 43 percent; 5) Betsy and Shane's "Gladiator" and Lanie's "Big Bad Mamas" (tie), 9 of 23, 39 percent; 6) Mike's "Hollywood Mike," 8 of 23, 35 percent; 7) Chimp-Chimp's "Blind Monkey," 3 of 23, 13 percent.

OSCAR NIGHT
Old photograph conjures up happy thoughts
COVINGTON -- The time was the early 20th century. The place was Baton Rouge. The item: a team photo of Louisi- ana State University's women's basketball team.
The interest? None other than Grandma was among the Lady Tigers suited up for the photo. One
of the more
interesting
aspects of
it is Grand-
ma's, um,
shall we
say "dimin-
utive" size,
especially
when com-
pared to basketball players.
     Bobby recently
remembered the old picture and thought it might be worth tracking down to get a copy of.
"It just occurred to me that it would be cool to have a copy of that," he said.
Of course, the task is made easier thanks to the Internet, through which the picture can be electronically transmitted and posted on the Web site, where everyone in the family can download a copy.
   Do
you have it? If so, e-mail Mike or Bob.

NEW ORLEANS -- After much agonizing over where or whether she would get accepted to do her required practicum next semester, Bridget found that she was the
first choice of everywhere she applied. She actually was able to turn down the prestigious North-western University because she got a better offer.
In other news, we are planning a wedding shower for her on either May 19 or 20.
Also, Sherry jumped her final hurdle to licensure when she passed an oral exam in Baton Rouge last week.
Sherry and I also recently went to a baby shower for Theresa LaCoste, Mary Jane's youngest, who is expecting a boy in April. We were surprised to see Linda Lacoste there, also in maternity clothes. She is expecting some time this summer.
Betsy and Shane have been looking around Michigan and nearby for a place for both of them to practice. Right now, they like the looks of a place called Sioux Ste. Marie. After a few years of practicing in
Northern-Exposure-like conditions, they plan to return, richer and wiser, to the South.
