COVINGTON -- He may be new to the "Survivor" pool this season, but Steven is  playing like a pro.
After three weeks, his team is atop the
standings,
beating his
mom, dad and
sister, all of
whom are
somewhere in
the top four
spots.
   In last place
is the
Dartboard
Monkey
, the
prog-
nosticating
primate
that is making
selections via
a dartboard, but only barely.
   Holding onto the embarrassing penultimate
position is
Mike Scott,  who positioned himself to actually win last season's  contest before failing to make picks in the third-to-last week.
"I'm just trying to make it interesting, that's all," Mike said. "Ain't no way I'm going to get beaten by a durn monkey."
OSCAR TIME: Come on in, the water's fine.
With less than a week  before the big March 24 telecast, only three players have joined in the family Oscar pool. One of those is the Dartboard Monkey and another is Mike's team, so anyone who joins is assured of a decent finish.
Invitations were sent out a few weeks ago, but if you didn't get one or accientally trashed yours, drop us a line and we'll e-mail the pertinent info to you.

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- For weeks, the Mel Gibson flick "We Were Soliders" has been atop the box office, but the stories behind the story, the poignant tales of the Vietnam-era veterans who lived through the fight, can now be found online, on the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer Web site, thanks to Mick.
Mick interviewed dozens of people for what originally was published as
a special
section,
giving them
a chance to
describe --
in their own words  -- their experiences as combat soldiers.
"Not all of their stories made it into this section. But most did," Mick wrote in his introduction to the special  section. "The stories
are detailed, and graphic. Some are quite long. Some are heartbreaking. They're all interesting, and they're all real."     Based on the book "We Were  Soliders Once ... and Young," the film holds a special place for people of Columbus: "From February 1963 through July 1965, more than 16,000 men were brought together at Fort Benning and trained to become Air Cavalrymen," Mick wrote. "Then, during a nationwide
speech on July 28, 1965, President Johnson committed what was named the 1st Cavalry Division to Vietnam. A week later, Columbus and Phenix City said a warm good-bye to their soldiers. ... These were our boys."
The special section, called "They Were Soldiers," also included information about the two bloody battles around which "We Were Soldiers" is centered.

NEW ORLEANS -- A few months ago, Katy, flying under radar, quiety graduated from college.
This time, we're not going to let her accomplishments escape attention so easily.
After rolling the dice and turning down a job offer at a small newspaper in Meridian, Miss., in order to pursue a job at a larger paper in Ohio, Katy recently learned that she soon will join the ranks of the employed.
She interviewed with all the muckety-mucks and, fittingly enough, on her birthday accepted a reporting job at the
News-Sun, a medium-circulation paper in Springfield, Ohio. The paper is part of the Cox chain.
She plans to join the paper in mid-April, although her exact beat has yet to be determined.
She expessed some dismay at the prospect of moving so far away from her family, especially after only returning home from college in Columbia, Mo., a couple of months ago, but she'll be within reasonable distance of sisters in Chicago and Detroit and a cousin in South Bend, Ind.
   Congrats, Katy!

In keeping with the magical theme of his recent birthday party -- his fourth -- Sam's  cake, a Lanie original, featured a wizard hat. Above, Sam, in his new Quidditch jersey, gets ready to chow down. (Photos by Paul Marina)
4 years old, any birthday is magical. For Sam, though,
that was particularly true recently as he celebrated
his special day with a Harry Potter themed party.
