NEW ORLEANS -- With Vince likely to be deployed soon for the possible war with Iraq, Sherry decided to go in search of a replacement, someone else with whom to romp around the house, frighten away burglars and help keep the kids occupied. Enter Barney. Barney is a 1-year-old boxer Sherry found through a boxer rescue organization. People who have purebreds but choose not to keep them for one reason or another can surrender them to the organization to be adopted. Barney found himself in that predicament, in a kennel awaiting adoption. He was already housebroken and crate-trained. His flaw? His ears don't match. Due to an improper ear cropping, one ear is permanently up, one down. "It gives him a rather focused look," Sherry said. She took Gus, along with Marigny and Mimi, to meet Barney and decide whether he was the right dog for them. Gus is a little afraid of dogs, and Barney, on all four paws, is nearly the same height as Gus when Gus is standing up. You can imagine the look on his face when Barney gamboled out of the kennel and went straight for him. Sherry quickly warned Gus that Barney would think he wanted to play and would chase him. She said to tell Barney to sit. Gus marshaled all his courage, looked the dog in the eye, and squeaked, "Sit!" Barney sat. Gus opened his eyes. It was love at first sight. "I'm your new owner, dog," he informed Barney a few minutes later, as he attempted to teach Barney to fetch a ball. Barney fetched the ball just fine. (He was not so good about returning it, but all things come in time.)

COVINGTON -- The Web page hasn't been udated in a few weeks, but that doesn't mean we haven't been hard at work behind the scenes. Today, after much tweaking and toiling, we unveil our new message board. It has a number of advanced features that will give Web site visitors some neat new capabilities. Among them: Any visitor will be able to post photos immediately to the site, bypassing the need to wait for the sluggish Webmaster to do it. Visitors can also create and track online polls for other users of the message board. The new board is actually a part of the Yahoo! newsgroup concept, so there's one minor procedural change: It will require users to sign in to use it. (Of course, you can set your computer to recognize you and remember your logon and password everytime you visit.) It'll also require you to request permission to contribute to the board during your first visit. (That way, no just any unknown Web user can post whatever photos he or she desires.) After getting that initial clearance, you'll be good to go. Don't worry, though. We'll leave the old message board up for now, for those who might be resistant to change. We suspect, however, that you're going to love the new board. Check it out now at http://groups.yahoo.com/ group/greatscott2003/. We've already seeded it with some great photos, including some Thanksgiving and Christams photos, so you've got good reason to visit. If you have any problems accessing it, e-mail your friendly neighborhood Webmaster. He'll gladly help you out.

PHOENIX -- After recovering from acute food poisoning the day before -- and after saying a teary goodbye to her friends in Springfield, Ohio (but not to Springfield itself, which she was glad to get out of) -- Katy rolled out of town recently in a rented moving van, with Artie and two cats in the cab and Katy's car being towed behind. They began their 36-hour jouirney late on a Saturday and, driving mostly at night, traversed Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico. After taking a two-hour detour through a petrified forest, they arrived in Phoenix on a Tuesday morning. Artie, realizing their rental truck would be noisy, brought along headphones so they could hear their CDs. But it was so noisy, they couldn't listen even with headphones. So what did
they do during the drive, since it was too noisy even to hold much conversation? According to Katy, they let the cats entertain them. When asked what the cats were doing, she had a one-word answer: "sleeping." Katy had rented her apartment online, sight unseen. She says the complex has a beautiful view of the mountains, although her apartment is in the basement, so she has a view of a wall. Still, she still likes it.

Molly lands in Spain
COLUMBUS, Ga. -- So when is a trip to Toledo worth writing about? When it's Toledo, Spain, and you're spending a semester there as part of a Notre Dame international study program. That's what Molly's doing this semester, and she's having a fantastic time, according to Judy. "She's living with the Gomez family -- mother, father, 13-year-old daughter and 16-year-old son -- and takes 4 classes 3 days a week," Judy wrote. According to Notre Dame literature, Toledo
THE BRAIN IN SPAIN STAYS MAINLY IN TOLEDO
"has been called the quintessential Spanish city; for Cervantes, Toledo was 'the glory of Spain and the light of her cities.' ... Toldo's architecture and monuments display a splendid variety of medieval and renaissance styles, from Arabic mosques to Jewish synagogues and Christian churches." Molly's weekends are free, so she's got a lot of traveling in mind. She was expected to spend this weekend in Madrid.
