IT'S A GIRL!
COVINGTON -- Maybe there's something to this "girl power" stuff after all. After seeing its first-ever all female champion- ship game, the Family Fantasy Football League has its first female champion: Lanie. Lanie's team, the Big Bad Mamas, defeated Lesley's Medicine Woman 48-47 to become the third person to have her name inscribed on the Bob Trophy, awarded annually to the league's best. She also gets to keep the trophy for the next year. The title game ended up being a heartbreaker for Lesley. She held the lead late in the fourth quarter of the last game to be played, and Lanie's best player was on the sidelines. That's when fate took over: Two fourth-quarter fumbles by running back Garrison Heart cost Lesley four points, dropping her score just below Lanie's. That's how it would end. "Ahhhhhhhhh!" Lesley said upon hearing the news. "Ahhhhh-ahhhh-ahhhh!" Lanie wasn't the only winner last weekend, though: By losing to the hapless Quein Es Tu Papa -- coached by Mike Walsh -- Shane and Betsy finished the leage in last place. That gives them the top pick in next year's draft.

SPRINGFIELD, OHIO -- Katy's trading in her snow tires for margarita salt. She resigned last week from her position as a Springfield News-Sun reporter after accepting a job at the (Phoenix) Arizona Republic. "Woo hoo!!!" Katy said as she frantically threw all her belongings into boxes. Nearly a year after she applied to the Republic, the paper called to offer Katy a place in its two-year professional development program. She'll spend her first year covering education in a suburban bureau and will get a new -- as yet unknown -- beat her second year. It's only a temporary position, but Katy said it's definitely a step up. With a Sunday circulation of 601,000, the Republic is 20 times larger than the Springfield News-Sun. "I might be in a little over my head," Katy said. "But at least I'll be in a city where there are restaurants other than Waffle House." It will be Katy's first trip out West. She said she welcomes any visitors who are willing once she moves in Jan. 20. The Republic was a family-owned paper until two years ago, when Gannett bought it. Katy, who is at a Cox-owned paper now, said she's a little worried about Gannett's poor reputation in the journalism world. But she talked to some current Republic reporters who said not much changed since the sale. Most of the people Katy told about her move seem excited. Even her boss, who told her he didn't want her to leave, said she couldn't pass up the opportunity. "Woo hoo!!!!" Katy's mom, Liz, said.

Nothing's ever certain, but Lanie's latest ultrasound suggests her newest baby is a girl.
COVINGTON -- The two-vote majority held by the males over the females in the Covington branch of the family is about to get narrower. Or at least so says Lanie's doctor. During a recent office visit, Lanie found out that as-yet-unnamed baby No. 3 is a girl. Lanie insisted that she would have been happy regardless of the baby's gender, but her happiness at adding a bit more estrogen to the household was apparent. Surprisingly, the men of the house were equally as excitied about the prospect. Sam and Ben both said they are both ready for a little sister, and Mike simply cooed. As for the prospect of seeing the male-held majority shrink to one, Mike shrugged. "Not that it really matters," he said. "We may have the popular vote, but Lanie must have more electoral votes or something, because she's the boss. It's like the 2000 presidential election around here, and we're always friggin' Al Gore." Now comes the tricky part: Coming up with a name. Lanie and Mike were relatively on agreement when it came time to name Sam and Ben, but in neither instance were they prepared in the event they had a girl. They simply couldn't agree on a girl's name. This time is no different. "I think we might just have to call her 'Number Three' until she's old enough to pick her own name or something," Mike said. "Because we've got nothing."

We did it for Sam, and we did it for Ben. We did it for Gus, and we did it for Marigny. We even did it for ol' Bamboo the poodle. Now it's time for us to open the floor to suggestions for naming Number Three. What do you think? Simply type your suggestion (or suggestions) in the box below, and click the "I got it" button. We'll post some of the best ones later.
