| What the hell is drifting? Drifting is basically getting your car sideways down a road. Doesn't sound that hard does it? Sounds a lot like powersliding huh? Well it isn't. Its actually much more complex. Instead of a drifter causing a drift then countersteering to straighten out, he will instead over correct to put the car into another drift. That is the reason many japanese drifters choose to use mountain pass roads (touge) because there are many tight turns all strung together> so in essense a good drifter has the ability to take several different turns without having any rear wheel traction at any stage. |

| First off you can have fun in a fwd (front wheel drive) car but you can't take multiple turns so its not really drifting. Because of that we wont even bother talking about ff cars or techniques. The car you need to use to drift needs to be a rwd layout. Why you ask? to propel yourself through a series of drifts you will have to have the power coming from the rear wheels to keep the back of the car sliding while the front wheels control the drift. This can't be done in a ff car because both the power and control wheels are at the front. A good choice of drifter in NZ would be FC3S RX-7 because of its high power output and rwd layout. Other cars suitable for drifting include the 180/200sx, silvia, AE86 levin or trueno, FD3S RX-7 or a variety of other lighter rwd cars. To start just get yourself a Silvia or an AE86 these are lower powered cars and aren't as snappy as the larger higher horsepower drifters. For starters at least do some aftermarket suspension (lower and harder) | |||||||||||||

| Once you have got your car you will want to find somewhere you can basic practise car (drift) control. Since im assuming your a beginner you will need a big open area to first practise at. A good choise would be an empty car park (preferably if you know the private owner). Its probably a good idea to wait till its raining so there are not many people around and your screeching tyres wont alert the local cops and pull your tyres off the rim by spinning out. Later on when you are feeling comfortable you should take it to the track | |||||||||||||
