| The Maynooth Hillwalking Club ( formerly Known as the Glenroyal Hillwalking Club ) was started th Spring of 1997 by a group of members of the Glenroyal Leisure Club in Maynooth Co.Kildare, Ireland who had an interest in the activity of hillwalking. Since then the group has developed into the present hillwalking club which is affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Ireland (M.C.I). Since our first hike there has been a steady interest in our activites, in particular the Easier Introductory Hikes. Over 800 people from at least ten different nationalities have attended our hillwalking activities. Some, have persisted and are now the core group of membership of our club, others have fallen by the wayside while others attended one or two activities and felt it was not for them. We have a few who occasionally attend our activities when they do not clash with other interests. In the Autumn of 2000 the club formally applied and was accepted as an Aspirant Member of the Mountaineering Council of Ireland at their Spring AGM. In Feb 2002 the Club formally presented itself at the MCI AGM and was accepted as a full member of the organisation. The membership has many benifits including individual personal public liability insurance. As our membership grows, demands from membership expectations will be varied. This will require greater active participation from the membership in the training, planning, and execution of events. The challange is there and now the future development of the club will grow at a pace dependant on the membership participation. During our short period of existance a number of our members have completred a number of hillwalking challanges in Ireland ( Maamturks, Ring of Imaal, Galtees, Blackstairs challanges). Two of our members and one of our visitor non members completed the 740 Kms trek from the French Pyrenees to the pilgrimage centre if Santiago de Compastelo and a further 80 Kms to Finistere. Other members have completed Alpine hoilidays in the French Alps. Hopefully in the future, energetic members will develop on these achievements. Walks in the Austrian Tirol region, the German Alps, and the mountain regions of Norhtern Spain have been visited by members of our small group. There is a lot of interest there. We can only go forward with this level of interest. |
