| The only reason I gave Donnie Darko a 9 was because it took me so long to figure out what the hell was going on! But, here's my analysis of what Donnie Darko is really about. In 28 days, 6 hours, 42 minutes, 12 seconds, the world will come to an end if Donnie doesn't die. It's as if his life was planned out. Frank, the 6-foot tall bunny saves Donnie from death by falling plane engine to give him a look into the future. Frank is already dead. Donnie lives the next 28 days experiencing things that are out of the norm, things none of us really know about. He knows Frank has a master plan for him. The whole town of Middlesex "knows" something is about to happen. They just don't know what it is. So, Donnie has the decision to make. Kind of a "do you choose to save the world and die, or not save the world and die anyway" type thing. So Donnie, eventually, travels back in time 28 days and is killed by the engine. Frank is from the future, Donnie killed him, and Frank came back to change the past. It's all very confusing, and I know what I've typed doesn't make much sense. The first time I saw it, I had no clue what was going on. I had to watch it three other times just to understand what was happening. If you rent the DVD, watch the director's commentary on the Deleted Scenes page. You'll understand a lot more of what goes on. The webpage is awesome, but won't really give you many clues about what has happened in the film. Time is up, Donnie. |
