Personal: Judith and I were both late starters,
both married for the first time in our forties. We
are both eldest children and our parents had given
up hope that we would ever find that special
person. I was working in Melbourne, Australia on
a banking software project when Judith and I met
at a Red Cross charity ball (we both love telling
the story, but that is for another time). An
opportunity came up for me to return to the states
to a software project in Dallas and when I told
Judith she agreed it would be a great adventure.
Anyway, being a bit older neither of us had ever
thought we would have children. We read in the
Dallas paper about Chinese adoptions, and the
next thing you know we were "pregnant". We had
a little delay in the process while we had some
discussions about the upcoming changes in
lifestyle and bought a house and stuff, but
attacked the paperwork early in 2000 with great
excitement. While I admit to occasional
moments of anxiety about becoming a new parent
at 46 (47 by the time we travel to get her) I don't
think I have been this excited about anything in
my life. Judith is a school teacher and since she
deals with children every day has a few more
reservations about this whole thing but has
always wanted a child and I think once little
Meiling (current name choice) is home I think we
will really get into this. I have seen her with all
the nieces and nephews and she is a natural.
