Sensible Soccer

FIFA sucks!

*** BREAKING NEWS - JON HARE CONSIGNS SENSI TO HISTORY (AGAIN) ***

"We just about got away with the 3D version, to do it again would be a huge mistake. I'd rather make less money out of it and have it as a gaming icon."

The Game

Sensible Soccer 98 is a work of flawed genius. Easily the most playable football game on the PC, it's stayed true to it's previous incarnations by being simple to pick up and great fun to play. However, the production team were put under pressure to complete the game in time for the 1998 World Cup, so it never had the chance to become the finished article they envisaged. As a consequence, the AI is far too weak, but the characteristic Sensi gameplay still remains. The commentary is honest and minimalist, with classic lines such as "Pathetic" and "Negative play", and doesn't pretend to simulate the real thing.

As Sensi 98 never truly had the impact it deserved, it never really developed an Internet following - most of the die-hard SWOS addicts gave it scant notice due to it's lack of career mode or management options. Indeed, these were probably forthcoming in SWOS 2000, which never saw the light of day due to Sensible Software's financial crisis. We can only hope that at some time in the near future, the potential of a SWOS sequel will be realised, and the human race will be rescued from the ineffectual trappings of the inept FIFA series. The only game which tried to emulate SWOS was the risible Euro League Football - which promised so much yet failed to deliver an even remotely playable experience. In these pages, however, I am determined to keep the legend of Sensi alive...

Download a Sensi 98 Custom Teams patch from my brother Ross' site. It updates your CustomTeams.ss file to include the 20 FA Barclaycard Premiership teams and other major squads. Like me, Ross is a committed Sensi 98 player, and this patch will be regularly updated (mainly because we'll be using it ourselves).
