So,
why Cambodia? Because we want to help. It's as simple as
that. In March 2000, the Yates family started supporting the "Anlong Veng" project in the far north of
Cambodia - a difficult to access area, which only just over a year and
a half ago
got out after decades under the Khmer Rouge. The 1999 / 2000 dry season was the first
time these children got any real schooling, yet 45-70% of the children still
do not attend school of any kind, even for one year.
The project
will provide primary
schooling, buildings, teacher training using "sustainable"
techniques, and library resources for several
thousand primary schoolchildren.
One of the four
districts involved is Anlong Veng, 120 kms north of Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) , and near the Dangrek
mountain range on the Thai border. Another is Trapang Prasat, 34 kms east of
Anlong Veng. Hopefully
in 2001 we can extend to Varin and Angkor Chum, closer to Siem Reap but
still very much cut off in educational terms.

The
Save the Children (Norway) Cambodian office and the
Siem Reap Provincial Education Office
are the agencies doing the really hard
work. We
intend to document the
work, and gain publicity to help these Cambodian
children via this site, so please come back a few times if you have the
opportunity. Check
out our big Cambodian links list. See if
there are other ways to help. Learn
more about Save
the Children (Norway).
