Aromatherapy
is a holistic treatment, which involves the use of essential oils to
improve both physical and emotional well-being.
Essential oils are aromatic, liquid substances extracted from various plants, and they can be used in many different ways, such as in massage, baths, compresses and by inhalation. Massage is the most efficient way of using the oils as they are both inhaled and absorbed by the skin at the same time. Essential oils have many different therapeutic properties. Some oils are very calming and relaxing, some more energising and invigorating. Certain oils are analgesic, i.e. they are good for relieving aches and pains, some are good for digestive problems, others good for hormonal problems and so on. In aromatheapy massage, the individually chosen essential oils are mixed in vegetable based massage oil and applied to the skin. |

| HISTORY OF
AROMATHERAPY
The use of essential oils goes back thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians are generally regarded as the true founders of aromatherapy, as they used essential oils for cosmetic, religious and medicinal purposes, and perhaps most famously, for embalming the dead. Also the Greek and the Romans started experimenting with essential oils and often used them in baths for cosmetic and medicinal purposes. In the early 1900´s, a French chemist Gattefosse discovered the antiseptic and healing properties of neat lavender oil, and started studying the therapeutic effects of other essential oils. In the 1950s, an Austrian-born cosmetologist Madame Maury introduced the idea of combining essential oils with massage and devised the "individual prespriction"-choosing oils according to the physical and emotional needs of the recipient. Her clients reported dramatic improvements in their skin condition and experienced many other benefits, e.g. pain relief, deeper sleep and a generally improved mental state. From there, aromatherapy has become very popular in recent decades and a lot more research has been done on the benefits of the use of essential oils. |
