Free Range Eggs Please
The grocery stores here in the Netherlands are for the most part just like the ones back home. There are a few differences, of course. For instance, when you buy loose fruit or vegetables, you are supposed to weigh them at this little machine and print a little price tag that tells the clerk how much to charge you. Well, you don't have to do that at every grocery store anymore, but I'm getting away from the point of this story.
The main difference in the grocery stores, of course, is the food that you'll find in them. They have really great boxes where you just have to buy a few fresh ingredients, mix everything together and voila! A really yummy meal! It's nearly paradise for a non-cook like me. And you can choose from recipes all around the world: indian curries, thai specialities (including my favorite: phad thai), turkish delights, and of course the ever-present mexican and oriental dishes. Heck, I can even find my Yakult drinks in the grocery stores, something I always thought I could only get my hands on in Japan!
Of course, I do miss some of my good ol' American staples: chili, chicken wings, lemonade (they think it's just a flavoured liquid that you add to water here), salt-n-vineagar potato chips... *sigh*
So anyway, I went to the grocery store today, bought my fresh, free-range eggs, some drinks, bananas, a packet of chicken, some sour cream, and a box of Kip Madras (chicken madras) for dinner tonight. Simple, isn't it? I came home and decided to make an omelet for lunch. I cracked open 2 eggs from the dozen I had just bought, and they both had double yolks. Is this some sort of omen? I don't know about that, but the omelet sure turned out tasty. :-)
