Asia-chans Do's and Don'ts of Sailor Moon Crossover fanfiction (and sometimes fanfiction in general) Do- Be orrigional! No one likes to read the same story under seventeen different titles! Don't- Destroy the author's character's in the process. THIS IS A BIG NO NO! Do- Keep the characters in, uh, character! Don't- MUTILATE THE AUTHOR'S CHARACTERS! (have I said this befor?) Do- Let yourself be inspired by other works Don't- Copy (cheaters!) Do- Check your gramar and spelling befor posting anything for keeps Don't- rely completely on a computer spell checker to fix your errors for you (thery don't allways work...()() Do- give your characters some beleivable flaws. Don't- make your characers perfect. Perfect is boring, and it makes it harder to create a good plot. Do- make a well rounded plot, including elements from more than one genre (a horror story doesn't have to be just blood and gore, it can have humurous parts as well. A Romance doesn't have to be all mushing a sucking face, make your character's embarrassed, goofy, childish, or cocky if you want. Romance in real life isn't all just kiss and make up. This will help to eleviate the “soap opera” feel of a romance) Don’t- try to shove in so much of each genre that your story doesn’t make sense anymore. Do- have interesting situations and character interactions. Don’t- try to pass off a bunch of cute or steamy or action packed scenes as a story. Remember, a story has a PLOT! Give your characters something to strive for. A semi-constant in all chapters that works with the smaller struggles. Do- have fun with what you write! (if you don’t like what you’re writing, you’ll try less to make it interesting, and pretty soon, your readers won’t like it either) Don’t- let readers/reviewers dictate what will happen in your story. This is probably the NUMBER 2 BIG NO NO! reviewers tend to suggest things they liked from another story. It’s not allways a bad thing but let me give you a small example. For any of you that read Sailor Moon/Gundam Wing fanfiction, this will probably pop up in around 80% of your reviews: “That was good so far. Are you going to put Heero and Usagi/Serena together? You should! Are you going to kill Mamoru or Relena? You should! Do the senshi turn evil? They should! Write more soon, ja!” Yeah, I get this a lot. I know it’s hard sometimes, but cover your ears and write what you want! It may bruise a few spaztic egos, but it’ll be better for your readers anyway. :D (this was a long, “Don’t” ne?) Do- write something and post it even if it doesn’t go with the latest faddish mindset. Who cares if at the moment everyone’s into gore? Upload your comedy post-haste! If you like it, someone else might too. Don’t- be offended by unpleasent criticism. Learn from it. Just because someone doesn’t like what you’ve written and says so TASTEFULLY, it doesn’t meen that they’re flaming. A flame is different than constuctive criticism. Well, that’s all. I hope I’ve given some good advice. See ya! Asia-chan
