In six years of the Classic, there have been 5 champions. A victory in the 2004 Classic for one of these men could solidify their place in Sheflin Acres lore as best golfer in Maxwell Classic History.
Storer won the very first Maxwell Classic back in 1998. He is also the first golfer to score a hole-in-one at Sheflin Acres (hole 10 in 1999). Dave is notorious for his aggressive style of play and willingness to attempt the most difficult of shots. In 2003, he showed his leadership qualities by captaining Team Red to a thrilling come-from-behind victory. Could there be a more fitting farewell to Sheflin Acres than a victory by the man who won the very first one? Critics say...Storer won in a bygone era with a smaller, less competitive field. Since 1998 Storer's scores have not resembled those of a contender. He is the only champion not to win with an under par score.
Sheflin is always a threat on tournament Sunday. Nobody has a more intimate knowledge of thenooks and crannies of Sheflin Acres than he does. In 2001, Tim took home the title in a year many say the course was at its toughest. He has 4 Top 5 finishes to his credit, but has blown up in his other two rounds (+12 and +7). If the Sheflin of 2001 shows up this year, it could be 2 wins in 4 years for Tim. Critics say...Sheflin won in 2001 due to a lucky hole-in-one on The Meadow. His winning score that year would not have won in 1999, 2000, 2002, or 2003.

After Top 3 finishes in his first four years, Dave Wright finally got the monkey off his back in 2003. He played the back 9 like no golfer before him, setting a new 9-hole record (-6). If Dave can pull off back-to-back titles, he would have to be considered the best golfer ever to walk the Acres. Critics say...If Wright were more focused, he would have 3 titles by now. He has performed below his potential.

From 1999 to 2000, Katz put together the most impressive stretch of 36 holes in tournament history, winning back-to-back titles at an 11-under clip. He is the only golfer with two wins and still holds the course record (-6). The same Andy Katz did not show up in 1998 (+10) and 2001 (+7). In the last two years he seems to be back on his game, posting two Top 5 finishes. If he can win his 3rd Classic in 2004, he has to be considered the best ever. Critics say...Katz won against a less competitive field. Abrano, Kane, Quist, Lemke, and Allyn hadn't even arrived on the scene by the time Katz's name was chiseled twice on the Maxwell Cup.
Abrano entered the scene in 2001 and has torn up Sheflin Acres ever since. In 54 holes played, he is 2 under par. In 2002, Bryan holed out from the deep rough on the 18th hole to claim the yellow pinnie in arguably the most dramatic finish in Classic history. If Abrano wins in 2004, it would conclude the most dominant run the tournament has ever seen. Critics say...Abrano held out on tournament directors in earlier Classics. As a result he has not given himself the opportunity to prove his excellence over a long period of time.
