The Right Side

Heero watched the crowd silently, looking for any possible signs of danger. Nothing seemed out of place. Worn people gathering to listen to their monarch speak once again. Empty promises of a better life they'd all heard a thousand times before. Why did they even bother coming? Was it to see the splendor of their queen, the jewels, the silk gowns? Was it a way for them to imagine the life they would never have? Heero didn't know... he wasn't sure why he was there... still in his preventor's uniform.. still on the same mission he'd had since the group had formed: guarding the monarch's life.
Snorting quietly, he scanned the crowd once again. He almost thought he'd seen someone in a priest's outfit... but it couldn't be.. and even if it was, the crowd had swallowed the vision back up greedily. His friends.. the former Gundam pilots had all left the preventors long ago. Each one had different reasons.. but underneath it all was the same thought. They had fought, bled, and nearly died to achieve a peace that was little better than the war. Heero thought it too. He knew with all of his being that almost anyone would be better at ruling than the spoiled queen in front of him... but this was his mission. What did he have left without the mission? Nothing. Unless he could find a new mission...
Lost in thought, the faces in the crowd meant nothing to him.. so long as they weren't acting suspicious. He felt alone up on that terrace, even though he was only a few feet away from the Queen of the world and her entourage. Sighing, he paced over to the railing closest to the crowd, observing all of the people perched on it like a flock of starving birds. Suddenly, violet eyes caught and held his attention like nothing had in a long time. An ivory hand beckoned him closer, as his eyes drank in features he had thought he would never see again. "Duo.." he whispered, leaving hs post to stand right at the edge of the stage, then sat down to be closer to the rail that held the wondrous vision.
His cheeks were smudged with dirt, the priest's clothes were worn and mended, and he didn't seem to have an ounce of spare flesh anywhere.. but Duo was still the most beautiful thing Heero had seen in years. Reaching down, he grabbed Duo's hand and squeezed it, his soldier's mask the only thing that kept him from bursting into tears.
"Heero, I can't stay... but there's another battle coming.. hopefully the last one. Please.. be sure you're on the right side." Duo squeezed his hand carefully, then pulled off his priest's jacket, handing it to Heero as he slid down from the rail, to be swallowed by the crowd once again. Numbly making his way back to his post, Heero held the jacket carefully in his arms, pondering the strange light in Duo's beautiful eyes.

"Another damn parade." Heero muttered under his breath, forcing himself to look attentive until Relena dismissed him to his post. He was much closer to the crowd this time.. in an area where he could observe everyone without being observed.. which suited him perfectly. Carefully, he removed his preventers jacket and threw it to the dirt, dulling the shine of various medals and insignia. Grasping Duo's jacket carefully, he held it against his face, inhaling the scent of chestnut hair, violet eyes, and a warm smile. Sliding it over his shoulders, he knew which side he was on.
Scanning the crowd, he saw three other figures sliding into positions similar to his.. figures in dark, torn jackets with various hats pulled low over their faces. One of the men looked quickly over to the place where Heero was hidden from view and smiled. Suddenly Heero felt a cold, yet burning sensation flow into his mind.. one he had felt several times before. His enemy lay before him. Drawing his weapon, he carefully took aim and fired.
Four bullets hit the Relena Peacecraft simultaneously, then bullets hit her entourage as well. In moments the platform was covered in blood, and no one moved upon it. The crowd did nothing as they stared at the spectacle before them.. not moving until a shadow fell between them and the sun. A familiar sight greeted their eyes.. one that they had never thought to see again. A Gundam shone pure and true, hovering over the people almost lovingly, protectively. "Zero." Heero whispered as he felt the fire in his mind recede. Making their way towards the stage, the Gundam pilots threw off their hats and coats, standing proud over the scene of horror they had just caused.
Zero gently landed on the ground, opening to reveal the blond pilot within. Unstrapping himself, he came to stand beside his comrades, as their eyes danced with iridescent fire. Clearing his throat Quatre caught the crowd's attention like a vice. "We have killed one enemy here today, but the biggest enemy still remains. The hunger, misery, and despair of everyone will not be allowed to continue. We are at war! And we five pilots will Not let the enemy conquer!" He shouted, bringing his hands up into fists. "With your help, or without it, we're going to get things back the way it should be!" He suddenly smiled as four other gundams landed next to Zero. "We will be watching whoever is chosen as a ruler, and unless they help us put things back together, they'll be answering to them."
Heero watched the crowd, expecting an attack to come at any moment, not expecting the cheering that followed Quatre's speech. The people knew that their heroes had returned.
***
Heero caught Duo's hand as they walked down the hall of one of Quatre's many estates. "You know I would have come with you, Duo." His blue eyes carefully searching those of the man beside him.
"You weren't ready to give up the dream." Duo stated with a tired smile. Stopping suddenly, he threw himself into Heero's arms. "I missed you." He said, trying to keep the tears from his voice.
"I love you, Duo." Heero said quietly as they walked towards the future together.
