Heaven Beside You

Be what you wanna be
See what you came to see
Been what you wanna be
I don't like what I see

You know today would have been our six-year anniversary right? Duo stared across his mug of coffee into the cold blue eyes across from him. I dont see why you bothered inviting me out, you havent wanted anything to do with me before this what do you want?   Pulling his blue jacket closer around himself, Duo leaned backwards and folded his heavily muscled arms across his chest.
Heero frowned and studied the hard man across the table from him. Youve changed. He noted, forcing himself to meet the angry gaze Duo directed at him.  Duos beautiful amethyst eyes were rock-hard, same as the rest of his body.
Well it looks like you havent.  The perfect soldier is still the perfect soldier. Did you run out of battles to fight? Is that why youve come? Im sure you knew I didnt want to see you. Did you want to fight me? Time to cash in on all the times you threatened to kill me? Smirking, Duo spread his arms wide, making the largest target of himself he could. Go ahead. You killed me five years ago, it shouldnt be too hard for you now.

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
And you think you have it still, heaven inside you

Damn you Duo, the time I spent with you was the best in my life. I want to be near you again..  Heero said, forcing the words through clenched teeth.  I still love you.  Frozen eyes seemed to melt for a moment as his inner torment forced its way to the surface. Searching the man lounging across from him for any sign of reaction to his words. As Duos eyes flickered angrily, Heero fell silent, his mask of Non-emotion firmly slipping back into place.
So you think you can come back, take me out for coffee, tell me that you want me back, and everything will end happily ever after? You left me to be Relenas bodyguard. To spend every waking moment guarding her precious life.  Folding his arms again, Duo leaned forward, unable to hide the look of agony in his eyes. If that was what was important to you back then, why should I be what is important to you now?

So there's problems in your life
That's fucked up
And I'm not blind
I'm just see-through faded,
Super jaded,
And out of my mind

I left you because I couldnt stand to see what I was doing to you. Every day I saw you hurting because I couldnt show you how I felt. You were giving me all the love you had, and I was draining you, giving you nothing in return. Bowing his head, Heero couldnt meet Duos eyes. I became Relenas bodyguard because I knew you would think I left you to be with her, and you wouldnt try to get me back.
Duos gaze turned stony again. Why dont I show you what your leaving did to me, since you were so worried about what staying would do. Grabbing Heeros hand in an iron grip, Duo pulled him up and led him outside.  Pulling his jacket off, Duo grabbed a helmet off the back of his bike. Here, wear this.  Hopping onto his motorcycle, Duo gave Heero a challenging look. "Hop on.
Putting his arms around Duos muscular waist sent a jolt of shock through Heero. It seemed like only yesterday he had held his Koi this close, breathing in that oh-so familiar scent. How had his Duo become so cold? So jaded? Suddenly he realized why. Because of me. Heero whispered, as salty pain stung his eyes.

Do what you wanna do
Go out and seek your truth
When I'm down and blue
Rather be me than you

Heero looked up at a large building with a set of beautiful stained-glass doors. The sign above them read Dishonor. Following Duo closely, he nearly ran into Duo as he stopped just inside. Give me the gold one. Duo yelled to the cashier by the door. Ignoring her look of adoration, he deftly caught the chain she threw over to him. Fastening the heavy links around Heeros wrist, he looked deeply into confused blue eyes. This will let you go anywhere in the club.  It will also get you anything here free. You might want to have a look around, talk to people. While Heero was trying to absorb all this, Duo took off. Ill find you after the performance.  he threw over his shoulder.
Making his way carefully into the main room, Heero was shocked at the sheer mass of people squeezed onto the dance floor. He knew pre-colonization music was a fad right now, but he hadnt realized the extent it went to.  Everywhere he looked, someone was twisting and moving to the beat that seemed to come from all corners of the room.
Hey man, thats Duos bracelet! an excited female voice said from behind him. Ive never seen anyone but Quatre wear that. Are you one of Duos old friends also? Heero shifted slightly to face the energetic redhead behind him. You could say that. I havent seen Duo in years though. Hes changed a lot.  At her look of disbelief, Heero found himself elaborating. I was a gundam pilot too. When I knew Duo he was completely full of life.. he was an angel. Cursing inwardly, Heero couldnt believe hed just said that.
Really? Sometimes I think that he must have been different  I dont think he could sing like that if hed always been that cold. Taking a sip of her drink, she pointed up to the stage. Hes supposed to be on soon. Hey, you could get a balcony seat with that bracelet on! Tugging at his arm, she led him to a set of side stairs guarded by a man wearing a black priests outfit. This gentleman is Duos special guest tonight, and I think Duo would want him to have the best seats possible. The girl said to the grim-faced man with a wink. Rolling his eyes, the guard cracked a smile. Ok Serena, take him on up.

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
And you wish you had it still, heaven inside you

Ignoring the chattering woman beside him, Heero studied the stage carefully, watching for any sign of Duo. He didnt even notice that someone was behind him until a heavy hand was placed on his shoulder. So Heero Yuy, youve come back.  A familiar and tired voice came from behind him. Heero turned to catch a face full of hair. Wufei stepped back, looking at him with care. I didnt think you would come here. If you had a couple of years earlier, I would have killed you for what you did to Duo. Sighing, Wufei sank into the seat Serena wasnt occupying. Now, you may be the only one that can save him.
Save him? How could he be in danger? There are guards all over the place, and look at how strong he is Heero walked closer to the edge of the balcony as he caught sight of Duo carrying some instruments. Mesmerized by the confident strut and swaying braid, he didnt even notice that Wufei was still talking to him.
Listen to me Heero. Duo has tried to kill himself five times in the past year. The only reason he hasnt succeeded is because hes trying to make it look natural. Shaking his long black hair out of his face, Wufei pulled Heero close. He is going to succeed if he doesnt find something to live for. You could give him that something if you try. Wiping tears from his eyes, Wufei stared impassively down at the stage. If you cant help him, no one can.
Staring blankly, Heero tried to absorb what he had just learned Duo? How could Duo kill himself? He was always the one who had a reason to live. Shaking his head in denial, he froze in shock as he heard the music start, and Duo began to sing.

So there's problems in your life
That's fucked up
I'm not blind
I'm just see-through faded,
Super jaded,
And out of my mind

As Heero listened to the words of the song, he realized that Duo was singing about himself. The words may have been written by someone else, but the thoughts and feelings were Duos own. Heero smashed his fist against the railing as he silently cursed himself once again.
I could have stayed with him, I was such a coward. I didnt want to have to open up, to face the way I felt. I was scared, and it was easier to leave than to admit it..  Wufei nodded and smiled slightly.
Well it does sound like youve learned something. Hes almost through with his set, lets go down and meet him. Pulling Heero up, Wufei pulled him down a hidden set of stairs, to emerge behind the stage.

Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
Like the coldest winter chill
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
Like the coldest winter will
Heaven beside you ...Hell within
And you know you have it still, heaven inside you

Heero watched Duo carefully as he dragged himself back behind the stage. The sweaty, miserable man didnt seem to notice that he had an audience as he set his guitar on the rack and leaned against a wall. Suddenly, realization hit Heero hard. This was all or nothing. If he didnt give Duo his all, he would never get him back. Mission accepted. Hurling himself towards Duo, Heero found himself only inches away from the face that had haunted him for years. Pushing Duos hair back from his face, he kissed him wildly, showing Duo how he felt in a way that couldnt be denied.
Heero, why? Duo panted as he held his former lover at arms length. Dont do this to me not again he broke off as lips firmly pressed against his and arms came up to pull him closer. I must be insane.. he breathed, and kissed Heero back with all the love hed been denying for years.

So there's problems in your life
That's fucked up
But you're not blind
You're just see-through faded,
Overrated,
And out of your mind

Wufei smiled as he watched Duo drag Heero off to his room. Youre both insane, but it works. Picking up Duos guitar, he softly played a love ballad as the lights faded around him.
