| Not "Goodbye", but, "See you when we get there." | |||||||||||||||||
| Max may have been small in stature, but he more than made up for it with his heart. He had the heart of a fighter, never giving up. He had the heart of a very good friend, always there to give love and companionship. | |||||||||||||||||
| Max was a fighter even before he found us. He showed up where we were working one day, extremely thin, wearing a much too big collar that reeked, with a case of mange. Needless to say, no one that we worked with wanted to have anything to do with him. But he still had the will to live. But something in his eyes told us that he had something more to offer. And we were right! After agonizing for hours over whether we could afford another dog, we brought Max home. How could we not? It was one of the best decisions we ever made. Max was 'initiated' into the family by our other two dogs. After the dust settled and teeth were no longer bared, he was an offical member of the pack. When our three year old niece came to visit, it was love at first sight for Max. They became good friends and playmates. Even in the weeks before his passing, Max enjoyed having his friend come to visit and play with him. A few days after he went to the Rainbow Bridge, I received a phone call. On the other end of the line was my niece saying, "I'm sorry Max went to heaven". It brought tears to all of our eyes. It made me realize that I made the right decision when I had him laid to rest with a towel that she had used as a blanket for her baby doll during her visits. Maybe when she's older I'll tell her about how Max went to heaven with something to remember her, his little friend, by. Max touched all of us in his own sweet, gentle way. He will always be in our hearts, although they all bear the hole he left behind. A hole that won't be filled until we meet again. So until then, Little Wonder, we won't say, "Goodbye", but instead, "See you when we get there". |
