| The '90 Honda XR250R as I got it. Rode hard and put up wet seems to fit ! |
Got to start somewhere. The tank is off and I'm trying to decide where to go from here. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Well on the way to being ridden again, the XR has new bearings in the rear wheel, fresh grease in the swingarm bearings and a fresh powder coat finish on the frame.I think this is gonna be ok after all. New tires and tubes front and rear get it one step closer. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| After many hours of work, the engine is off for a check-up, the running gear is stored and the job of stripping paint has begun. Will it ever look good ? If the engine is trashed, there isn't much point to go much further. Engine work time now. |

| Well, finally the XR rides again. After several years, all the major repair work is done and the Honda rides again. I still need to replace the throttle cables and the front brake hydraulic line, but that isn't an emergency. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| New fork boots, new grips and LOTS of cleaning later, the XR is coming along very well. It will be a little plain without the Honda tank logos, but $100 for the decals is too much for now. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| The Honda XR250R story. This bike was given to me by a good friend that just had too many projects open at once. He wanted the XR to be ridden again and appreciated by someone who really loves to ride dirt bikes - ME ! I really wanted another dirt bike but didn't think I could afford one, so I jumped at this chance... Little did I know that I could almost buy a rideable bike for the time and parts this one needed. BUT, I like a project and love dirt bikes, so I accepted the challenge ! The first step was to identify exactly what I had and what was needed. This required disassembly of the whole bike, down to every nut, bolt and washer. The engine had not been treated very well, so that was the best place to start. After tear down and inspection, I determined the basic engine was sound but needed a new piston, ring set and maybe some head work.(update - cracked head and warped valves) The head work would be the most difficult to get done, cuz I can't do it myself (unlike most of the other required work) and I will have to pay someone to do it.( update - I installed the new valves and seals myself) As of 11-01-2004( 6-30-2008 updated) I have invested : piston, rings, etc., $125 powder coat frame $150 seat cover, fork boots, grips, levers $ 80 tires, tubes, bearings, seals $160 head, valves, gaskets $400 All in all, I have about $915 to get this bike project up and running. Spread over 4+ years, it doesn't seem that bad. Running like it does, I guess it should be worth $1000 to $1200, so I am ok on that end. I don't think I could buy an XR in this condition for less than that anywhere, and I know what has been done to this bike. Even more, I know all work has been done to Honda specs as published in the official shop manual. |
