To Readers

    This time, sad to say, there was no time for preparation of distribution, in a word, writing an article.
    I will continue the serializations from next time, I am sorry.
    Anyway, I would like to report the present situation and the things which I did during this month.

    I have moved to Norwich which is at a distance of about 100 miles northeastward from London. 3 days before the university registration, suddenly I joined a group which Master student are involving. The first Live should be on 4th October, but it has unfortunately been cancelled because of circumstances of UEA (the University of East Anglia) Drama studio. Well, we will do in another place.

    Though it is very nice to join them (It is so brilliant because I can start my musical activity in the same time of joining university!), what I have now is only a PowerBook G3 because I had been concentrating at English study. All instruments I use for a long time are still in Japan. But I had to make a 10min. track which makes crazy guys dancing within 10 days.

    Therefore, Making instrument was started with MAX + MSP.

    There are only Cubase VST/24 and MAX+MSP in my PBG3. There was no choice except for Cubase to fulfill the theme (Noise + Grunge + Dance + Something world sound + 149bpm + 10min.).
    So, I tried to compose some sample files into a truck on Cubase.

    And, how were samples?
    Fortunately, I brought some sound effect CDs from Japan so chose some sounds from this, and haphazardly recorded some sound from TV by the fact that a PB mic input connected with a TV earphone output.

    I checked these samples and some of them got a certain rhythm pattern, so next, I needed to fix their tempo into exact 149bpm.

    I was exhausted this. Anyhow, the quality of changing sample length on Cubase is not so good. And "sample" is not a sampler, in fact, it is just a file, so the length or pitch can't be changed by through MIDI etc.

    "No choice." and I started to programme a software sampler which is for stereo (namely, it is for 2 audio channel only.) by MSP.

    I provide this now. Please remind that it is a shareware.

Determine ver1.0
For PowerMacintosh
Software Sampler + Sample Edit
1999(c)Shigeto Wada
Specific function of Determine ver1.0.

* Loading and Saving into AIFF(16bit/stereo)
* Monophonic sampler done by MIDI input
    or a keyboard on the screen.
* Changing speed of playing sample.
     * Set by number is multiple of 0.25.
     * Set by number to 5 decimal places.
     * Set by tempo with bars and musical time.
         (tempo to 2 decimal places)
     * Make line changing of playing speed
         by setting starting speed, finishing
         speed, and duration to attainment.
* Setting Loop in and Loop out
         (with 1/1000 second resolution)
* 2 channel mixer
* Use of up to 3 VST plug-in and
    saving and loading the parameters.
* Recording of performance and
    output in AIFF(16bit/stereo)

It contains adequate functions though I focused on my requirement that making an instrument of sampler and effective samples.

Recommended environment

* PowerMacintosh Later (better CPU604/120MH)
* More than 32MB application memory (better more than 64MB)

    It is my best for this issue. As I thought, study in university murders me.

At the starting of MAX i MUM
      MAX i MUM is distributed to widely encourage people to make use of MAX, a musical programming software developed by IRCAM.

      Thus the content includes quite basic usage of each object and description of terms, also introduces the interfaces which are provided by MAX and the optional software or hardware of it.

      Moreover, it would be really welcoming that applications of readers which agree the above purpose.

      MAX is a rare and excellent software which gives chance of making up musical works with well thought of logic and mathematics of creators, in other words, without concerned with special skills such as reading scores or playing musical instruments, to the persons who want to approach music actively.

      I do hope at the starting of MAX i MUM that a lot of readers would be interested in composition, arrangement, also sound engineering, furthermore, here would be a place that we exchange enjoyable information each other because of this magazine.

What MAX is.
      Beginning in late 1986, MAX for Macintosh was developed in IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et de Coordination Acoustique- Musique) by Miller S. Puckette, and was put on the market by Opcode Systems, Inc. in 1990. Later, it has further being developed by David Zicarelli. Originally a non graphical language intended to control IRCAM's powerful 4X synthesizer. Additionally, original Objects can be made in C-language because MAX has been written in C-language, also Patches can be programmed by Text editor.

      " Max is a graphical music programming environment for people who have hit the limits of the usual sequencer and voicing programs for MIDI equipment."  (Miller Puckette, Max reference manual, 1988)

      MAX can control only musical instrument with MIDI. But there are an optional software, "MSP" from Cycling'74, which real sound will be added to be dealt with MAX, in addition, whose original system is ISPW (IRCAM Signal Processing Workstation).
