chapter twenty:
Quest for the Ring of Fire

They stopped. Eolair shook his head and said, "Let's go back. I think we've gone far enough. Quarionis and Thelekon agreed.

The company marched back to the entrance and camped in the large room with the great double doors. After some meditation and rest, Quarionis announced that he had discovered the formula to the spell Teleport! The party rejoiced. This meant no more hikes back to Verbobonc. It would save them at least a month and a half.

The next day Quarionis began the two-day event of teleporting the party to the Morningstar Inn in Verbobonc. They found that laws had changed since they had been there last and could no longer carry weapons in the city. While reluctant they complied, keeping their weapons at the Runesword Magic Shop.

The following days were spent shopping, resting, scribing, brewing, and meeting new friends. Marius had been gently nudged out of the party due to his "condition". And the group met a new companion, a dwarf with rogue skills that tied Rugbar in an alcohol-poisoning contest.

While in Verbobonc the party was approached by an elderly half-orc wizard that offered them 50,000 gold pieces if they could find a magic item for him inside the Crater Ridge Mines. The party agreed and quickly got back to the dungeon with their new friend, Merg the dwarven rogue.

Quarionis had just teleported into the Mines when there was a pounding at the doors. The party quickly spelled up and took possessions as the doors burst in. In rushed a horde of pale skinned ogres with huge white milky eyes and giant clubs! Tsarith thought they looked scary and blew them all up.

They spent the next night in another room than headed for what they hoped was the Water Temple. Instead they found a strange serpent-like creature living in a pool of water. She seemed to be rather forth coming with information when Eolair reached for his bow to shoot her. She breathed a bolt of lightning on Eolair and two of his buddies, so Eolair decided to leave his bow be. After gathering this information, they went back to their room to plan and for their assault on the Temple.

When they emerged the next morning to go find the lost fire ring, they were ambushed by gnolls! Tsarith thought they looked scary too and blew them up. Only this time his pea shaped fireball zipped from his extended finger only to hit a gnoll leaning to the side. The fireball exploded much closer to him than he had planned and he and his friends were fried along with the gnolls.

The next day they pressed on to the Water Temple. Tsarith went flying off down a water filled tunnel to scout ahead. He came flying back with news that trouble was coming. Nothing came. He flew back. This time he came flying back down the tunnel followed by a giant animated wave! The wave reached out with watery arms and slammed the companions relentlessly as they tried to harm it. Eolair was first to fall and would have died if not for Quarionis' quick thinking. Tennaris was not as lucky. She had advanced to get a shot at the elemental only to get too close. Three pounds of the elemental's fists and her skull was cracked, brains oozing out.

To avenge her death the party slew the magical creature. Yet all they could do was retreat to their hideout and plan the final assault on the Water Temple.

The next day they made their way through the tunnels only to be waylaid by gargoyles! The rocklike beasts dropped from the ceiling and launched themselves from the walls! They killed them all easily. This time nothing would hinder them from their mission: To Defeat the Water Temple!
