chapter nineteen:
Women-Slayers

The heroes, with their new companions, pressed on to find a large cave filled with a shimmering green pool. In the center was a small flat rock, and it's depth was indeterminable. There seemed to be a small boat on either shore, so Marius and Eolair stripped down, got in the boat, and rowed across the still pool, watching the green light shift and dance off the walls and ceiling around them. Then it happened...

A hideous creature with seaweed for hair, covered in warts, and with a stare that could freeze your soul leapt up out of the water and tried to capsize the boat! While it didn't work, Marius changed shape, taking on the form of a boar paddled after her! Eolair quickly took one of the magic spheres from a pouch and threw it at the hag. Striking her, a magic sphere was created around Marius and the wretch. Marius, the feral hog bored the witch to death while paddling to stay afloat. He then took on human form again and swam to safety once the sphere had gone away.

The rest of the party was astounded at the sight and questioned him about it. He explained it was an affliction that had cursed him for many years now and he could not control it. They said he could go first then...

Eolair found a secret chamber by diving underwater where two prisoners were chained and suffering. He gave them food and water and left them since they were too weak to swim.

During the fight Quarionis had created a path of ice across the pool and everyone crossed it safely. But just on the other side was a room where a dozen armed men charged from! They were quickly defeated and the group pressed on.

Again they found a group of human men up on a balcony and proved to be hard to defeat as they were joined by strange amphibian humanoids. But soon enough the humans and fishmen were defeated. A prisoner was taken and in exchange for his life told them where the head of the Water Temple was including the trap guarding her lair.

The party went after her, crossing by an invisible pit. Something in the pit had touched Eolair when he put his hand through the illusion so all effort was made to avoid falling in. On the other side of the pit were two rooms where a wizard and cleric were. The fishman wizard cast a web spell on the party to make things complicated and the female human cleric didn't seem effected by the web so that for a time things seemed dire. But Thelekon dispelled the spell allowing her to move freely in the web and she became stuck, easy prey to Eolair the woman-slayer.

The wizard was blinded, stunned, and shot by Q and company, yet nearly got away if not for being hacked down from behind by the heroic warriors.

And so the backstabbing, woman-slaying heroes thought it was time to rest.

The company went back to their normal area to rest. Eolair and Marius were on watch when they heard the moaning. Eolair saw a woman moaning, holding in her intestines, begging for help, so he rushed toward her, about to draw a potion of healing when he saw shadows to either side in the cave... displacer beasts! The panther-like monsters with tentacles growing from their backs attacked Eolair as a pack and tore him to shreds. Eolair left the screaming girl and retreated as best he could while fighting the monsters.

Meanwhile the rest of the party came to help and while the monsters were tough and nearly killed the ranger, Eolair was healed and the company was victorious. The girl was dead when they got to her, her guts still between her fingers.

The next day they headed out, exploring a new tunnel. Rugbar stayed behind to guard the entrance. In the new tunnel they found a giant statue of fishmen riding a giant eel. It was strange and otherworldly to say the least when something strange and otherworldly appeared in the room. A fish-like demon-like flying monster attacked the group with a savage fury. They killed it.

After looting it's lair they took a side passage, heading down further, against Tsarith's advice...
