"Isn't Miss Connolly here yet?" I whined.
"This is horrible awful weather we're having, especially since it's summer." Commented Mrs. Whall looking out the window. And indeed, in September, little glistening snowflakes fell to the ground.
At that very moment Miss Connolly came through the gym doors arguing with Miss Ball.
"MaryBeth this is all your fault." She yelled.
"My fault, you were the one who opened the book to the wrong page." She yelled back.
"True but you were the one who read the spell." She stuck out her tongue, which struck me as childish.
"You two honestly, "I started "You're acting more like a child than I am and that's saying something." But I don't believe they were listening but at least they stopped fighting. Actually, I don't think this is better but they just glared at eachother.
"Please let's get right down to business, there is no word, Dee go with Jennifer to see what she finds out, Susan and MaryBeth go make sure everyone is still frozen. Shellie please go get Talcum powderhmm" Miss Towle was saying as she flipped through the book. "Rats tails and some I can't seem to read this, oh yes horsehairs." And every one then filed out of the gym.
"What about me?" I complained.
"Colleen, I haven't forgotten you, I have a new job for you every day I need you too conjure up the benches the cauldron and the podium." She flipped through the book. "Do you think you can do that? Here why don't you try it."
The book floated delicately through the air to where I stood. I took a deep breath and did what the book said:
Envision what you want wave your wand three times and say sacanthumim
As I followed these steps I closed my eyes and without opening them I asked Miss Towle, "Did I do it?"
"Not quite." Answered Miss Towle. At that point I opened my eyes and saw that accidentally I turned Miss Towle into a snowman, excuse me, snow woman.
"Oh um Miss Towle I'm sorry, but do you know which page the counter spell is on?" I inquired.
"Three hundred forty six, and hurry I'm beginning to melt." She proclaimed.
"Zoomose" I shouted with a wave of my wand and Miss Towle stood there in a puddle of water.
"Maybe I'll have Mrs. Pipitone show you that spell." She began "Go help Mrs. Pipitone and Miss Ball to make sure everyone is still frozen."
I got to the end of the hallway leading up to the lobby saw a figure stopped and without being seen watched.
With his nose to the air the mysterious stranger said, "There are witches here I can smell them. There's five, no six, [sniff sniff] That's strange I smell six and a half witches. Hmm nice freezing spell they're good."
Incredibly angry, I stepped out into where I could be seen, "That's my freezing spell and I am not half a witch, I am a very good witch and I think,"I stopped, "that I'm confused are you a wizard? Why are you here? And what do you want?"
"You're cute," he said I glared at him and in a babyish voice he bent down got face to face with me. "Now where are your elder witches, little girl?"
"The head witch is in the gym." and I pointed down the hallway, I waited until he was half way down the hall, "And I'm not a little girl." I crossed my arms and smirked until
"Twenty six seconds." Screamed Miss Ball rushing down the hallway. I rushed to pick up my wand, which I had dropped in the hallway. I waved it and for brief second things moved, But as suddenly as they started they stopped again.
"What happened?" asked Miss Ball when she came back.
"I just re-froze everyone again." All she said was
"Oh."
I wandered back to the gym where the stranger and Miss Towle were engaged in what men and women do.
"Miss Towle show me that bench spell again." I pleaded.
" Can't you see I'm busy?" she asked not even looking at me.
"But you promised." I reminded her not moving.
She smiled at him then took me be the top of my arm and pulled me to the door. "Shoo." She told me as she closed the door, "Go bother Miss Connolly."
I went to where Miss Connolly usually does her for seeing. When I got there she was stirring the large pot.
"Isn't he dreamy." She asked me finally realizing I was there. I looked into the pot. That was the stranger but he wasn't in the gym with Miss Towle He was walking down the hallway.
Just then I heard a knock on the door I opened the door and it was him.
"You, again?" I demanded.
"Cute." Was all he said and then pushed me out the door and walked in. I listened.
"Hello." Miss Connolly was so obsessed it wasn't funny. Then next something happened I didn't expect, well I think, they kissed. How strange I thought that was not right, not two minutes ago he was kissing Miss Towle what was his deal? I decided that before I got too frustrated I went to go see if I could help Miss Jackman.
Miss Jackman was in her room stirring the pot with the requested ingredients. She saw me right away.
"Could you get me a vile or two out of the cabinet?" she requested I bent down and picked out two viles. "Thanks." She said and she ladled some potion into the viles.
Then she ladled some into a cup. "Try this." She instructed me.
"What is it?" I demanded.
"It's a potion that's puts you at ease with your thoughts." She explained.
"No thank you Miss Jackman I don't want to be at ease right now. But I'll take some for later." I told her, she screwed a lid on the container and I stuffed it in my purse, "Well I want to go find Miss Ball." And with that I left the room. I looked into Math room, no Miss Ball. I looked into the English room, and saw what I didn't want to see. Again I saw the stranger hitting on a new witch, kissing actually.
"Hey." I shouted. He turned.
"You!" he stormed over to me I backed up several feet and he walked over to me, "You are not, I repeat not going to ruin this for me."
"Just try and stop me, that's the third witch in three minutes (slight exaggeration, but what the hay) you are not, I repeat are not going to keep this up."
"You know what? You're right you're not half a witch you're all mouth." And with that he took me by the wrist.
"What are you doing? Let go of me." He took his wand and waved it and I couldn't open my mouth so I let out a bunch of muffled screams. He dragged me against my will down the hallway and locked me in the broom closet in between the girls' and boys' bathrooms.
I think I heard him clank down the hallway but I pounded on the door and made muffled screams. I slunk down in the closet giving up hope until
CLANK!!CLANK!! I heard Miss Whall's boots, so I pounded hard on the door.
Slowly it opened and I fell out onto the linoleum.
"Colleen?" Miss Whall seemed surprised to see me fall out of a broom closet. I frantically pointed to my mouth and shrugged. Mrs. Pipitone, I noticed was with her she took out her wand and undid my mouth.
"Thank you." I squeaked then we walked down to the library, "I saw Miss Towle and that stranger kissing, and I thought nothing of it then saw heard him kissing Miss Connolly, and just now he was kissing Miss Ball."
"He's up to something I agree." Mrs. Pipitone said.
"What should we do about an enchanter?" Mrs. Whall asked Mrs. Pipitone, more than me. She shrugged.
"I have it." I called. "I can turn him into a snowman and then"
"A snowman? You've never done that before." Mrs. Whall interrupted.
"Yes I did." I insisted, "I accidentally turned Miss Towle into a snowman when I was trying to conjure up some benches. like I was saying I could turn him into snowman and you could melt him"
"Actually Dee that might work." Mrs. Pipitone said to Mrs. Whall.
"And if it doesn't?" Mrs. Whall questioned.
"We get killed yada yada yada details details lets go." I got out of my seat ran to the gym where the stranger and Miss Towle were talking.
"Miss Towle stop he's an enchanter and he's been kissing every other witch." I shouted just before they kissed.
She had a look of disgust on her face. "You @#&^*$ (That's as far as I think I'll go)." She lifted her hand to slap him but he turned her hand into stone about, maybe, two inches from his cheek. Her face twisted in a look of extreme pain, but every witch knows only to scream if you're in very lot of trouble. Then she grasped at her hand and then he started turning her feet to stone and up. This time she let out a shriek of pain which echoed down the halls of the small school.
It finally reached her head and sealed up. "How dare you." I screamed, "That was my favorite teacher."
"I've had it up to here with you." He exploded, "I guess sealing your lips and locking you in a broom closet isn't enough, oh-no this time you've reached the end."
He went to do something with his wand and I kicked him, where the sun don't shine. As he bent down I elbowed him in the back and he fell to the floor. Then I did something I haven't been taught yet I made his wand fly through the air and straight into my hands with my mind. I've seen Miss Towle do it at least twice a day.
Mrs. Whall froze him and Mrs. Pipitone levitated him out the door and down the hallway, what they did after that is beyond me..
I called to the book, and praying it would work zoomed from the stage into my waiting hands. "I'll find the reverse spell don't you worry." I told her thumbing through the pages. Until finally I settled upon a page with a man turned to stone and a potion you have to pour on them to get them back..
I used Miss Connolly's mirror trick to call Miss Jackman and ask for the potion.
No more than two minutes passed and Miss Jackman rushed in with a vile full of foul smelling green liquid. I poured it over Miss Towle and stepped back.
The stone melted off her like ice. "Are you O.K.?" I asked her when she opened her eyes.
"Did you, just save my life?" I nodded, "Then no, my inferior saved my life?" she said more to herself rather than to me.
"I saved Miss Connolly's life before she said 'thanks'!" I proclaimed.
"Oh sorry where are my manners thank you, and you're right its not the end of the world, it just feels weird."
" Guess what? Miss Towle you ROCK my world." I laughed.
"I guess I deserved that." She smiled.
"You know what else you should try out for the ROLLING STONES," I laughed harder.
She diminished her smile and said, "O.k. that's enough." And I was almost laughing too hard to hear Miss Ball.
"45 seconds RUN!"
Miss Towle for some reason didn't move. So I grabbed her wrist pulled her to the front of the Math room and sat in my seat. When everyone else started moving again, she still didn't move.
I went to her side and facing the other way said, "Uh Miss Towle class is going on now." She then shook her head like she was coming out of a trance.
Then Josh Flagg said, "Miss Towle? You have a rock coming out of your pocket!"
