It was a cold, wet night on Wednesday 11th May 1983 when Aberdeen F.C. lived out arguably the greatest night of the club's 100 year history. In the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg,Sweden Aberdeen defeated Europes greatest club team,Real Madrid in the Cup Winners Cup. No one in Europe (except the Dons fans) gave the side from the North of Scotland a prayer but the Dons fans prayers were to be answered that night. |

| The teams were welcomed on to the pitch by a full house (mostly wearing red and white) and the game began with Eric Black crashing a shot off of Madrids crossbar after only 2 mins. Then after 7 mins Strachan floated a corner in for McLeish to head only to see his shot saved but Black was close by to tuck away the rebound 1-0 Aberdeen and a chance of glory. That was only untill later in the half when after a lapse back pass by Alex McLeish left Leighton but with no choice to bring down the attacking Madrid player for a penalty, which the Madrid captian slotted away to pull the scores level again. The match roared on with chances for both sides but extra time loomed. With 8 mins remaining in the second half of extra time and penalties on the way Eric Black picked up a knock and had to leave the field only to be replaced by John "super-sub" Hewitt and then to quote Archie McPherson's words "Peter Weir..delightful little chip forward..Juan Jose the covering player for....Mark McGhee,he's got Hewitt waiting in the middle..it's a magnificent goal for Aberdeen,John Hewitt celebrates and the Aberdeen supporters go beserk" It was truly the greatest night in the club's history and the team that started that night was: Jim Leighton,Doug Rougvie,John McMaster,Neale Cooper,Alex McLeish,Willie Miller,Gordon Strachan,Neil Simpson,Mark McGhee,Eric Black and Peter Weir. Of course John Hewitt also played that night and the manager was Alex Ferguson. The same squad also went on to defeat SV Hamburg in the Super Cup making Aberdeen the only Scottish club to win more than one European trophy. |
