In search of walleyes........
Canada '08 Trip

Just got back from a week in Sioux Lookout, ON fishing Lac Seul and Minnitaki.  While we the weather was a bit erratic, the fishing started slow and ended on fire.  We managed good fish every day with decent numbers early in the week and by the end of the week we where easily putting over 100 walleyes in the boat a day.  Our biggest fish of the trip was 28" and is pictured on the web site, but we had several fish in the 24" range.  Fish in the 16-17" range were extremely easy to come by.

We burned through a flat of crawlers in 4 days, put a strong dent in a 1/2 lb. of leeches the fifth day, and donated several crawler harnesses to the lady of the lake.  The most memorable moment was shore fishing from camp.  I went down to the shore under the bridge by our camp armed with a 6'8" medium light spinning rod and a blue Cabela's floating minnow crankbait.  In about 30 minutes I had caught 4 walleyes around the 15-18" range.  Between the current and the aggressive feeding attitude they were a blast to bring in.  I ended up losing that crankbait to a toothy northern, but it was fun while it lasted.

Second place in the memorable column was the last night of fishing.  We blasted about 50-60 walleyes pulling spinners over about a 3 hour period and switched to jigging/pitching as the night came to a close.  While pitching a plain leadhead with a leech on it a 23" walleye smoked the offering and set the drag screaming.  After a strong tussle she ended up in the net and came for a short visit to the boat before going back to the lake.

The scenery up there is amazing and the fish are more than cooperative.  Getting to go fishing with good friends is a real treat and I hope for many more of these trips in the future!

Keep the lines tight!

Fish Count= 578 walleyes/sauger
