Mattman Lives On
This comic saw Mattman abandoning his light blue and
royal blue tights for the darker, sleeker black "muscle" outfit (much like
the transformation Batman went through when those movies were made).
Blue Jay also got a bit of a make over as well (which only lasted this
comic before yet another costume was created for him). In this comic,
the Hero of Justice faced off against his four greatest foes -- The Yoker,
Bird Man, Fantastic Woman, and the Giggler. It also featured the
most non-sensical, anti-climatic ending to a comic when the boat they are
all fighting on spontaneously explodes (with no explanation), and Mattman
was somehow safe because he was frozen (The Yoker shot him with an ice
gun he -- once again -- inexplicably had) and Blue Jay swam into a shark
(yes, you read that correctly....) It was not clear if the villains
died, were captured, got away, or anything else. I was not trying
to be suspenseful or anything...
Mattman: Fantastic Fight
The second of the sole-villain issues saw the return
of Ghost Town's femme fatale, Fantastic Woman. The story was admittedly
unusual, which saw Fantastic Woman get a new pink and green costume, only
for the readers to discover it was a fraud. Strangely, Fantastic
Woman WOULD end up getting a new costume a little later, exchanging the
green body suit to black. Her newest incarnation (for "Hero of Justice")
I believe is the best, by far -- wearing a black tube top, black leather
pants, black platform shoes, and exchanging the maroon trim for silver.
Mattman: Birdman's Revenge
This story was extremely forgetable (I read it a couple
weeks ago and still can't fully remember what it was about). At this
point, I recall probably rushing through a lot of these comics to get to
Mattman vs. The Yoker and Phantom Revealed: Mattman 8 because both
of those stories would lead to much bigger things. Also, by this
time I may have already made the decision to kill of Birdman, so that may
be why I wasn't so into developing this issue. What basically happened
was that Bruce Basilo was kidnapped, Blue Jay had to save him so that he
could become Mattman and save Ghost Town. Not terribly interesting.
Mattman vs. The Yoker
This issue in particular set the tone for when I was
planning on turning Mattman into a series instead of a movie like comic.
This issue saw Yoker murdering Charles Morton -- with a little help from
a distracting Phantom. The seeds were starting to set with who exactly
the Phantom was (as it would be revealed in the next issue), as well as
the debut of a new hero -- Mattgirl. Mattgirl was actually Matilda
Morton (Commissioner Morton's daughter), and she initially blamed Mattman
for her father's death (beause he was unable to save him).
Ultimately she realized Mattman was not responsible, and dedicated her
life to fighting crime under a mask. Interestingly, Mattman would
not reveal to her his secret identity until she joined the Super Team much
later on. This issue also brought the return of the Giggler -- who
from this point on would work with the Yoker -- to create the ultimate
villainous team: The Demented Duo. I do believe this was also
the first issue where the villains escaped without being caught at the
end.
Preview Magazine
This was not so much a comic as a magazine I created
(but never actually really started) that would give previews to all the
comics I was worked on at the time (mostly just Mattman and Super Team
-- what started out a Justice League style series in which all the Super
Heroes teamed up, but after one issue basically became much more a Power
Rangers rip off). The cover of this issue (the only issue, once again
never really started) features the somewhat new look of Mattman (he's a
bit more bad ass looking than he once was), John MacArthur as a CIA Agent
(in the modern version of him I made, I decided to abandon the whole Men
in Black look), the mysterious Black Hero from the Super Team series (who
would was supposed to later be revealed as Ninja Master -- their former
leader), and intended new character Ben Hellner, who I will talk about
more when I scan and post his character. The casket with the roses
on it is supposed to be, I believe, Nalfred -- Mattman's trusted bulter.
Mattman Detective Series Article
This was the article that was supposed to be in the Preview
Magazine. Click on the image to see it full sized so that you can
read the writing. The article basically previews the fact that Mattman
will be a bit darker than he had been in the past (one way I did this was
by adding the gruff facial hair, and making the eyes on his mask smaller.
I also made him a bit leaner and added some muscles). It also reveals
that Nalfred will die, John MacArthur and Matilda Morton (Mattgirl) will
get engaged, the Demented Duo (Yoker and Giggler) will manipulate new villain
Titanium in hopes of destroying him, and Fantastic Woman will become obsessed
with returning villain Mr. Moneybags. After this point, I never again
completed a Mattman comic, so none of this stuff actually ended up happening.
Mattman Detective Series (Issue #1)
Before this point, all of the Mattman comics (aside from
the New World Saga, which I won't get into....) were supposed to be "movie"
type comics. The Detective Series were supposed to be more television
type, as in stories would not be started and concluded within one issue.
Instead, stories would be continued from one issue to the next. This
one is titled "Trust is a Fantastic Thing" which leads me to believe it
was supposed to center around Fantastic Woman, most likely coinciding with
the return of Mr. Moneybags. Aside from the cover, I did not even
start this issue, and -- like I said before -- I never again finished a
Mattman comic. So, basically, this is the last Mattman comic picture/cover
ever drawn.
