| Finding my Learning Style | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Have you ever wondered about what type of learning styles you have? Have you ever done a questionnaire about your learning styles? Well now is the time to do so. The HBDI questionnaire focuses on feeling, thinking, and doing and innovating learners. However, the VARK explains visual, aural, read/write and kinesthetic learning styles. Both of the questionnaires have provided us with lots of learning styles information and it shows how you apply it in school or in your normal day lives. Doing the HBDI or the VARK will help you improve in school and in your life. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| After taking the HBDI questionnaire, I discovered that I am a thinking learning. As a thinking learner, I learn well from instructors who present information with lectures, visual aids, problem solving by the instructor, textbook readings and activities that call upon logical skills. For example, at home I like to use visual aids such as flash cards while studying; it helps me to memorize the words. Another example is using my vocabulary book. It helps me to figure out which word goes with which sentence. In my reading class, I enjoy looking at an over head about finding the main ideas. That really helps me to pin point where the main ideas are. Also, in my reading class we go to the lab and use the computers to do our vocabulary work. I am able to look at the sentence and hear the word and see where it goes. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| As a doing learner, I enjoy taking action. I learn well from instructions who present factual information and step-by-step. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| As a feeling learner, I enjoy personal connections and an supportive emotionally environment. I learn well from instructors who are warm and caring. I also value feelings as well as thoughts. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| As for me being an innovating learner, I seek for new possibilities. I learn from instructors who encourage students to discover new ideas. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| According to the VARK questionnaire, I have a multimodal learning preference. As a multimodal learner, I have no single learning preference. As an aural learner I learn well by attending class everyday, explaining new ideas to students who can't get the old ideas. In study skills class I always ask questions about any topic I don't understand. Also, I learn well by participating in class discussion. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| As a read/write learner, I learn by using a dictionary to look up my vocabulary words and also words I don't know when I am writing a paper in my reading class and writing class. Also, in reading I use my textbook to high light all the important subjects that I may think might be on the test. And another example in study skills class, we do sq3r notes and that also helps us to prepare for a test. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| As a kinesthetic and visual learner, I kind of combine both of them in my schooling. In reading class we used an over head to help us find out what's the main idea of the story. In study skills class we did a puzzle that illustrated that's how we live our lives. In writing class we used hand outs to show examples on how our paper supposed to be. Also in study skills class I used high lighters in my textbook to create my notes. A finally, in the same class we used the internet to learn how to create a web page. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| According to the VARK learning styles I would say my study skills professor is in between. I would say he has multimodal teaching styles. Why? Because he does a little bit of everything. For instance, as a read/write teacher, in study skills class we do journals and he always gives us great feed back on them. The feedback that he gives us really lifts us up and encourages us to keep writing more journals. He also teaches us kinesthetic learning. For example, we did a puzzle in groups and that was to show us the way we do puzzles is the way we do our lives. Another kinesthetic activity is the graduation game. That was to get us ahead of our goals and accomplishments. Using the VARK teaching styles, he always gives us lots of enthusiasm in class. He also made us certificates of our goal and had us place them on the wall of fame. I think that was a good thing to do because every time I come to class I take a good look at that wall and it reminds me of my education. And last he uses is visual teaching styles to make us pay attention. What I mean is that he takes control of our computer and no one can use it except him. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| According to the VARK learning styles I believe that my writing professor has a multimodal teaching style. He uses his visual and read/write methods in class. For example, he motivates is the class where we can write our papers better. He also passes out hand outs to show us how he would like a paper to be done. He also uses is aural teaching strategies. He is always explaining new ides to enhance our paper. He is available in the writing lab or before class to discuss any problems that we might have with our paper. With his visual strategies he uses an over head to help us see the mistakes on our paper. Also using his aural styles he gives us lots of feedback and suggestions on how to improve and write a better paper. And finally, he uses his kinesthetic teaching by using the internet to show us how to get information for our profile paper. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| According to the HBDI learning styles, I score low as an innovating learner. Not that I am slow in this area, I can grasp myself when it comes down to paying attention when I have a professor that teaches in the way innovating learners learn. For example, by organizing my notes and study material using concept maps and personally meaningful symbols and pictures. Study with classmates who have different preferred ways of learning from your own. Use visual aids to explain concepts in class and participated in class discuss. | |||||||||||||||||||||
| Doing the HBDI and the VARK test really helped me to discover what kind of learning styles I have. Through these questionnaires I have a lot of information and have applied it in class and in my everyday life. | |||||||||||||||||||||
