From the minute he was born, Matthew's energy
and enthusiasm were boundless; he found joy and interest in the entire
universe around him. As a preschooler, he said he wanted to be the kind
of scientist who studied everything! He constantly amazed us with
the knowledge he would glean from reading and watching programs on the
Learning, History, and Discovery Channels.
Matthew had a knack for communicating with animals and somehow they
could sense his gentle spirit. Throughout his childhood he had a
veritable zoo that included bugs, fish, lizards, frogs, snakes,
iguanas, guinea pigs, and dogs. The only thing mom said no to was
a tarantula, and when he asked to keep a mountain lion if he could
catch it! He planned on attending California State University,
Humboldt's pre-veterinary program with the Governor's Scholarship
he earned with his scores on state tests and the Golden State Exam
honors he received.
Matthew was so blessed with a green thumb that friends would hire
him to help with their gardens. He grew flowers, vegetables, and
pumpkins and sold cherry tomatoes during the summer. We often
thought Matthew was part fish-he loved the water. Swimming, body
surfing and fishing were his favorite pastimes. Music was another
of his passions. Whether singing, playing guitar, writing lyrics
or composing music, he enjoyed a variety of styles. Among his
favorite groups were Def Tones, Tool, Sound Garden, No Doubt,
and The Fenians, as well as "oldies" like Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin
The Beatles, and Simon and Garfunkel.
Although he was lucky enough to travel to 36 states, Canada and
Mexico, he lived all of his life in Tustin, CA. with his older brother
Ian, his parents David and Elena, and a large and very loving extended
family of Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. His family
includes Grandma and Grandpa Wise and Cousin Baby BJ, who are with
him in Heaven; his grandparents, "Litos"; Aunt Darlene, Uncle Gary
and cousin Julie; Aunt Barbara, Uncle Tom and cousins Bret, Rena,
Beth and Sara and their children; Uncle Antonio, and cousin
Elizabeth; Aunt Lily, Uncle Mark and cousins Kevin, Alex, and
Laura; and Aunt Nina, Uncle Brad and Cousins Hannah, Sammy, and
Sophia.
Over 500 people attended his memorial service, and those who spoke
of him told about his exuberance and kind heart. He would give hugs,
lend an ear, walk people home, make sure they ate lunch at school,
help animals in need and mediate differences.
Matthew would have turned 18 in January and graduated from High
School in June 2003. On October 24, 2002, his family, his friends,
and the world suffered a great loss...

This poem was written by one of Matthew's friends
Nathan Thomas. Matthew had known Nathan since he was born.

Lightening Bug
The fire fly that dances
In the late June sky,
by autumn has gone away.
So, too, a light from my youth
that danced when I was young
beautiful and delicate
it's gentle light unique
shown a different way.
As the summer fire fly
one day must fade away,
so he did too
in autumn cold and gray.
His light will dance forever
in our hearts
to show a different way..

Matthew fishing in 1998, and Matthew 2001
When someone you love becomes a memory,
That memory becomes a treasure..

Don't cry because it's over
Smile because it happened...

Sometimes love is for a lifetime
Sometimes love is for a moment
Sometimes a moment is a lifetime...
