NEW
WEB-BASED
TRAINING RESEARCH
• New research from Solstra,
the net-based learning and
knowledge management system, shows that HR and
training
managers still firmly favor traditional training methods, but see
themselves making the massive leap to online learning within the next two years.
The research, which was conducted amongst 300 HR and training managers at large organizations (of mostly 500+ employees), was designed to assess the level of awareness and usage of distance learning methods, particularly attitudes towards online learning, and to discover how likely respondents might be to use online learning in the future. Results suggest that the next two years will see steep learning curves for those responsible for training, after which time online learning will come of age.
• Internet-Based training (IBT) is meeting with enthusiastic support. In a related survey by International Data Corporation, nearly 100% of respondents said they would recommend IBT to companies that are not currently using it, and almost 60% said they would strongly recommend it. Respondents were training managers, information system managers, and business unit managers from companies that have used IBT.
• Research from International Data Corporation (IDC) reveals that by the year 2001, worldwide training and education market revenues will reach $27.9 Billion, with Web-based training emerging as a sure-fire growth industry with projected sales of $6 billion by 2002.
• IDC Research Manager Ellen Julian projects U.S. spending on WBT via the Internet to reach $1.03 Billion, and $859 Million via corporate Intranets. The study also reported that nearly one-fifth of top U.S. Executives rated the lack of skilled personnel as the most serious constraint to the growth of their businesses in 1997.
• Other research points to the Labor Department's recent estimates that 80% of new jobs created in the next 10 years will involve new and expanding technologies, hence the need for computer/Internet skills in nearly every industry of the modern age.
