INTRODUCTION [toc]

This page tries to provide some links to Internet Resources related
to XML Editors. It contains links to web-pages that contain reviews of
currently available XML editors and to the XML Editors themselves.

QUICK CONCLUSION [toc]

The url http://www.xmlsoftware.com/ is a good resource for finding out what
  is available.

XML EDITORS   [toc]

XmlMind (http://www.xmlmind.com/)
An XML editor with a free and commercial version. See below

  http://pollo.sourceforge.net/
A colourfull tree-view XML editor, with special support for Apache
    'Cocoon' Sitemap files

Netbeans (http://www.netbeans.org/)
A programming IDE with good XML support. Supports XSL transformations,
automatic DTD creation from well formed documents, dtd and schema
validation, source and node view editing ... However the documents state
that XML documents greater than 100K in size should not be edited in the
node view because of performace degradation. This appears to be a significant
problem which carries over onto other aspects of Netbeans XML support.

Xerlin (http://www.xerlin.org/)
Open Source Java Based Editor. Is in current development. Claims
to support Schemas. Appears in active development (may 2003). Supports
schemas and WebDAV. The documentation in very 'sparse'. This is based on
    the 'Merlot' xml editor.

  http://www.lucid-it.com/en/tech-zone/editor/index.html
   Java based XML editor.

  http://www.tetrasix.com/
A MPL'd (Mozilla Public Licence) Editor. I say editor, but technically
it is an MS Word to XML converter, that is 'rtf' format to xml. It is
written in Java. There also seems to be a commercial version of this.
Last release appears to be November 2000, so it is quite old.

  http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com/tech/xeena
An 'experimental' java based editor from IBM. Can do XSL transformations.
The source editor (or perhaps only 'viewer') is very primitive.
Is possibly not being developed anymore (apr 2003). Is not really free.

  http://msdn.microsoft.com/xml/notepad/intro.asp
    A very basic free editor

  Emacs PSGML

COMMERCIAL XML EDITORS [toc]

  XmlMind |http://www.xmlmind.com/|
A schema and dtd aware editor configured using CSS and supporting WebDav
and remote FTP editing of documents. This is interesting because in some
aspects it is similar to what Alexis is attempting to do. There is a free
version which does not support XML schemas, and a commercial version which
does. A single user license is currently (may 2003) about 220 Euros

XmlDocs (http://www.xmldocs.com/)
This is a web-browser-based collaborative XML editor. This is an interesting idea but the program
requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher (no netscape etc)

  http://www.arbortext.com/html/products.html
The Epic Editor. Multi-platform. However it doesn't appear to run on Linux
It also doesn't appear to have a dedicated server component

  http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=Corel/Products/productInfo&id=1042152754863
    The Corel XMetal Editor

  http://www.vervet.com/
    The XMLPro Editor

  http://www.altova.com/products_ide.html or
  http://www.xmlspy.com/
The xmlspy editor. Claims to support schemas, soap, wdsl

  Clip 1.5 (no url)
  EditML (no url)

REVIEWS OF EDITORS [toc]

  http://www.xmlsoftware.com/editors.html#xmetal
A seemingly comprehensive review of XML editors. Contains no particular
emphasis towards free or commercial software.

  http://www.xml.com/pub/rg/XML_Editors
O'Reilly publishing's xml site and editor review. Emphasis on free software

  http://www.ivritype.com/xml/
A review of available editors. Many broken links.

  http://scriptingnews.userland.com/directory/1026/xmlEditors
Slightly outdated list of XML editors

MISCELANEOUS [toc]

The FAQ at the xmlMind site mentioned above contains an example of setting
the language locale on a Linux computer.

  http://www.snee.com/bob/sgmlfree/
How to use Emacs (the famous Unix Editor) to edit XML and SGML

  http://www.xmlsoftware.com/
Seemingly up-to-date (mar 2003) review of XML tools
Also contains a reasonably nice looking Dhtml menu system.
