Race Results (April 18th)
April 18th: Tri-State Raceway for Club Clash VI, Iowa Grand Prix Club vs.
Iowa T-Bird Club:
Start: 5th of 19
Finish: 19th with round 1 Red-Light
I departed around 7:45am, joined up with another Club Member in Waterloo and
we headed to the track. On the way to Earlville, which is about 50
minutes from Cedar Falls, it began to rain. I was hoping that the rain
would pass by quickly and wouldn't affect the days events.
We arrived at the track around 915
because of stopping for gas along the way. We paid our 30 dollars
(!!!) and went through technical inspection right away. After that I
found the Grand Prix's camped out in a area of the pits and I pulled in.
After talking with some members for a bit they called cars to staging to
begin runs. I jumped in my car and headed for staging.
I made about 5-6 passes over about 2
hours and decided that I was happy with my results and parked the car.
Around 11am they called our cars to staging for qualifying for the race.
We were given two attempts, and we would take the best of the two for our
time. After discussing strategy with fellow members I decided to go
after the pole. My first pass was disappointing, I went after the
lights hard and saw red right away. This meant that I would have to
get into the show on my second pass alone. As we pulled into the lanes
for round two I found that several people had gotten sub .550 lights and
decided to lay off and took a .567 which qualified me 3rd out of the 8 grand
prixs and 5th overall.
After qualifying we grilled hot dogs
and burgers and talked about how everyone's cars were running that day.
Around 1pm we were called to the staging lanes to begin the "Club Clash"
race. I lined up next to a Blue T-Bird whom dialed around 17 seconds,
which I thought was quite slow for that car. I dialed a 15.40.
The first two rows ran with both Grand Prixs winning, which made me feel
good about my chances. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to find
out. Once again I went after the tree and saw Red with a .487 light.
Done for the day right there. So, after coming to the race with high
expectations after winning the last event I went home with a first-round
red-light.
